Joel (Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Clementine (Winslet) has had her memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. One of those films where when I finished it, I had to immediately watch it again. I connected with all of the characters, especially Joel, and give mad props to Jim Carrey in this film. Also, you have to be excited about Kaufman's future in this medium.

I'm not ashamed to admit that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite movies of all time. Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey deliver practically polar opposites of their usual performances, and both pull it off perfectly. Charlie Kaufman reveals himself to be one of the greatest screenwriters around today, and Michel Gondry gives the movie the visual flair it deserves. Props to everyone involved.

Jim Carrey plays Joel to perfection. A beautiful story about relationships told in a very unusual way. I very much enjoy films that portray how memory is malleable, subjective and different from what actually occured. As such I really enjoyed it.

Reinvented the romantic comedy into a fantastic and heartfelt voyage into the mind and heart of the movie's main character. Stellar performances by the whole cast, Jim Carrey in particular (funny how comedians so often make great drama actors). A must see for anyone with a brain and a heart.

Well-made for sure, and it has an incredibly creative screenplay, but both of the main characters are so screwed up that the "happy" ending feels disingenuous, a convenient fade-out before more unpleasantness begins. Apparantly, the original ending showed that both characters went through the cycle of erasing their own memories and then meeting again over and over for the rest of their lives, unable to learn from their mistakes. That would have been a far more appropriate ending for them.

Fantastic, beautiful, moving, original, insightful, thought-provoking and entertaining. Charlie Kaufman is developing very quickly from a merely clever writer into a brilliant one. However, it would have helped me get behind the love story if Joel did more than meekly respond to Clementine's wackiness and scribble protectively in his journal.

One of the most original, moving, humane, and comic films I've seen. It encaptures so much truth about memories, human emotion, and the romantic nature of love. I can not find words to express how much this movie means to me, nor can I pick out how or why the film works the way it does. This is one of those that in the long run I believe will be considered one of the undying classics in film history.

Both Gondry and Kaufman are infamous for going off on tangents without a care in the world if anyone follows. Strange then, that for all Gondry's low-fi visual playfulness and Kaufman's weird plot-devices, this is one of the most grounded love stories ever put on screen. This is largely due to Carrey and Winslet, showcasing such a naked display of human frailty, that the oddball romance seems as recognisable as it is heartbreaking. Somehow all these odd ends have been tied perfectly together.

Wicked unique, and definitely my favorite Kaufman film. It's one of the only romantic dramas that really works for me from start to finish, and as such it would make a perfect date film. If your date is bored and would rather watch How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, dump them! Even Kirsten Dunst is good! Fucking miraculous!

So beautiful. Perhaps the movie where Kaufman finally managed to mesh his fantastic ideas with genuine emotion in the screenplay. Gondry's direction fits the film like a glove, and Winslet/Carrey are great. This seems like it's gonna end up being remembered, which is a great thing.

Kaufman's not bad at writing characters and dialogue. His problem is he couldn't in a million years write a good story, and so he attempts to make up for that by warping his basically shoddy stories into smart-alecky deconstructionist experiments. He thus sucks up to his audience, making them feel smart for having solved his gratuitous puzzles. The more Kaufman piles up meta-narrative complications, the easier he gets away with lame scripts like this basically brainless romantic comedy.

The film might be confusing sometimes, but actually, it's a deep and brilliant movie. A film about love, a broken heart and the desire to be together no matter what happenned. How the memories are used is new and really well-done. It gives an emotional, yet brilliant touch to this movie. The acting and directing was really superb and Jim Carrey shows that he's a great actor. He doens't have to be the weirdo in each movie. Just great!

One of the most creative movies I've ever seen. The real strength of the movie is in the screenplay, which manages to twist and turn and then brilliantly wrap up all the strands and loose ends in the final 15-20 minutes to the effect of great emotional resonance. Carrey and Winslet are both excellent. Fun and poignant and virtuoso in equal measure.

This was very good. I'm a huge fan of Kaufman's stories and this is easily one of his best and most human tales. Carrey and Winslet are both good in roles completely unlike them, and the visuals and score are pretty well-done too. I came pretty close tot ears towards the final fifteen minutes. I liked it even more the second time. All in all, this deserves al lot the praise it got. Highly recommend!

Kaufman's brilliant concept got the Gondry experimental treatment, for better and worse. Now and then the result goes off the rails - I loathe the Baby Joel scene! The narrative structure is elegant, but sometimes (mostly whenever Carrey and Winslet aren't both onscreen) things tend to become annoying or banal. All in all, though, it's a pretty, uhm, nice mess of a love story.

Oh, Jim Carrey. I loved you in The Mask when I was 7, and I love you even more now. The plot is chaotic, but deeply emotional and evocative for all that. There's too much going on to call it a love story, but that aspect is perfect nevertheless. Gondry's images of memories being torn apart are frightening but beautiful.

Charlie Kaufman is a genius to dream up this movie. It is imaginative, interesting, emotional, intellectual, and audacious. Jim Carrey, who I normally don't like, is wonderfully understated as Joel, and Kate Winslet is his foil in personality and romance as Clementine. Whenever the movie is with them, it is flawless. When it shifts attention to the secondary plotlines, it flags somewhat. The tertiary characters aren't badly written, they just suffer by comparison. A wonderfully thoughtful movie.

The first romantic drama I've enjoyed since Amelie. Jim Carrey is wonderfully restrained as a schmuck who undergoes a procedure to remove his ex girlfriend (Kate Winslet) from his memories, after learning that she had already had the same thing done to her memory of him. The story seemed very natural and real but dreamy at the same time, and the visual effects of Carrey slipping from one memory to the next were pretty cool.

This movie to me delivered it on just so many levels ... firstly the acting from both Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet is just awesome, they look so natural it really adds huge love/relationship factor to the movie. On the other hand there's this sci-fi story that's done so brilliantly I haven't really thought about being silly or anything from the first moment onwards. Add great effects and music, and you've got a love/relationship/family/loyalty drama/sci-fi/social drama and much more.

One of the best examples of film as a visual storytelling medium, this film manages to show the abstract workings of memory and the mind in a way that is comprehensible but also feels entirely natural. In classic science fiction fashion, the story uses a piece of fantastical technology (in this case a procedure to remove all memories of someone else) to explore its theme in a sort of literal metaphor. Carrey and Winslet are perfect in their roles, grounding the film with an endearing humanity.

A total acceptance of diminishing returns and inevitability justify the more acute/contrived moments of emotional distress. The thing is, while I understand the need to structure the film the way it is, I think the convolutions of the timeline may -- may -- be one turn of the screw too many. Still, a second viewing is even more rewarding than the first, and this is, ultimately, a touching and deeply emotional film.

This film gives me chills. Visually amazing, fantastically well acted (especially from Carrey, he was robbed for that Oscar) and extremely original. It's a testament to the power of film that Eternal Sunshine was able to accurately recreate the surreal experience of dreaming as well as offering a flawed but beautiful relationship.

Winslet and Carrey are in top form as the erratic, dynamic couple who decide to erase each other from their memories. While the technical/psychological showcase of the erasure process makes this a spectacle to behold, it wouldn't have been nearly as effective without its strong emotional core. Eternal Sunshine is a unique love story for the ages and one that everyone should experience.

With Winslet and Carrey's top-notch turns, the authentic dialogue, the beautiful soundtrack, and the exquisitely intimate camerawork, this would already be an amazing romance film even before the sci-fi twist (which perhaps has a hole or two) injects it not only with juicy story subversions (see Patrick's role; the deja vu post-erasure) and dramatic intrigue (see Mary's side-plot) but also heart-wrenching tragedy and oddball comedy. Brilliant editing through Joel's memories ties it all together.

However, there does end up being some emotional resonance with the characters by the end, mostly due to the acting talent on display here - Carrey especially is excellent, he should definitely do more serious roles. Pretty funny on occasion, too. Good, if overrated.

Very refreshing romantic comedy with a heavily emotional dramatic core. Kaufman's script is stellar, delving into the confused mind and the broken heart, while Gondry tells the story with the camera. His visual stylings coupled with the erratic editing can get disorienting, but isn't that the point? Carrey and Winslet are solid as the dynamic leads, and the whole supporting cast is superb, with Kirsten Dunst somehow not mucking it up. Couldn't think of a film more deserving of a rewatch.

A solid movie about people, the patterns they fall into, and the necessity of seeing who they are beyond those patterns. It's not quite as superawesome as the hype said - a bit too much focus on people casually being dicks, compared to the parts where they learn and grow and reach beyond being dicks - but man, when those parts get going, they *really* get going, into lovely empathy and wonder. Also, stylistically and in subject matter, this is the 2004-est movie I've ever seen.

While it's well made and creative, the way the story is told is a little too good for its own good, if you catch my drift. The movie throws a lot of wrenches in the narrative to throw you out and makes you want to piece it together, but for me, the characters were so dull and the romance was so uninspired that I did not really care. I've never much cared for this film, even since the first time I saw it, but recently it just seems to fall flat with repeat viewings. I don't recommend it.

It might be confusing and sprawling at times, but underneath is an excellently realised prospect of reliving a memory, shifting and turning in light of newly lost memories and newfound desires. It's really shows excellent creativity and originality all the way through, producing a totally captivating viewing experience.

At the level of, say, "philosophical" ideas about memory, consciousness and so on, it's probably more interesting than BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, but not as rich, definitely not as funny, and a little bit on the sentimental side (not too much, though). Still, there's a lot going on, and Gondry puts it together with a lot of care, craftsmanship and attention to detail. And it really does fit quite well with what, in Pursuits of Happiness, Stanley Cavell analyses as "comedies of remarriage".
