Money doesn't buy you happiness if this madness is anything to go by. Quite an intriguing little number, this, and even if it loses a bit of momentum in its latter stages it remains oddly compelling. Features some entirely bizarre set pieces, as you might expect from the director, and some fine performances from the quirky cast. Hackman's character reminded me of a mash-up between Royal Tenenbaum and Daniel Plainview. Gets bonus points for Hauer's posh English accent. Interesting.

Eureka is smart and well made, never goes quite where you expect it to, although ultimately it really doesn't go anywhere at all. So, there's nothing particularly memorable about it, but still it's well worth watching.

Alongside Hitchcock's "Torn Curtain", "Eureka" is notable only for having probably the most disturbing example of an overkill scene ever filmed.

Begins amicably enough as a tale of greed and consequence of quasi-cosmic significance somewhat comparable to a narcotic, drug addled McCabe and Mrs Miller before devolving quickly into an extremely dull drama reeking of a bad 70's hangover. Hackman, one of the greatest actors of the last 50 years, suffers under the leaden weight of Roeg's direction, who was never good with actors, and the rest of the performances range from mediocre to terrible. The dreadful courtroom scene is the final nail.

Kind of interesting at the start, but it ends up being a pretty straight, pretty boring period piece.

Roeg's visual style doesn't fit into the Eureka's story. Is not explosive enough as the most entertaining parts were those of comic violence and volatile drama.

Like any Roeg film, this has moments of a fever dream/nightmare mixed with characters in extreme turmoil. Great stuff. Unfortunately, the middle and much of the Pesci stuff feels poorly written and stuffed in without enough care. Still, Hackman is fantastic and this is delightfully ambitious.
