Evan Almighty

2007
Comedy, Family/Kids
1h 36m
Steve Carell, reprising his role as the polished, preening newscaster Evan Baxter of "Bruce Almighty," is the next one appointed by God to accomplish a holy mission. Newly elected to Congress, Evan leaves Buffalo behind and shepherds his family to suburban northern Virginia. Once there, his life gets turned upside-down when God (Freeman) appears and mysteriously commands him to build an ark. But his befuddled family just can't decide whether Evan is having an extraordinary mid-life crisis or is truly onto something of Biblical proportions. (Universal)

It pains me to give this movie a bad review, because a lot of the people involved are genuinely funny (Steve Carell, Jonah Hill, even Wanda Sykes.) Unfortunately, this shit was just not funny. You'll start watching and Carell will say a couple funny things and you'll laugh a bit, but not much. Then it'll quickly dawn on you that this movie is based on animal slapstick humor. Then you'll remember that animal slapstick is the least funny kind of humor. Then you'll be sad.

Painful. Another Daily Show alumnus shows up as the news anchor in this one: Ed Helms. According to IMDb, his character's name was apparently Ed Carson. I'm now waiting on Ed Almighty to round out the trilogy. In the spirit of this sequel, it will be about a man who leaves the news after 30 seconds to become an astronaut who talks with God. There will be talks of actually sending Helms and Freeman into space (for the sake of realism), and the movie should cost more than $500 million to make.

If atrocious puns, montages of people falling and getting boo-boos and one joke premises are your thing then you're sure to love this movie. If you're a reasonable person you'll probably sit and think about how it's sad that this garbage costs more than alot of movies this summer and what kind of starving nation still went hungry and what public school went underfunded.

Prayers, moral lessons, a funny beard, realtionship problems, a happy end and a dog that bites Steve Carell's chrum... What more do you want? (I did like the monkeys though)

God almighty !!! This is absolutely the most hypocritical crap I've ever seen. Not in a million years funny or likeable; the fucking slapstick comedy is ridiculously old and the bird-shit-gag was MAYBE funny the first time, but after the third time you kind of get that déjà vu feeling. ... The script is lame, the cgi is even worse, the acting pffff, the portrayal of women and children is laughable and the ending is just plain awful. ... By far one of the worst on criticker.

It's not particularly bad as critics have devoured it, but it's also not particularly funny as it's aimed for the kiddies and Steve Carell's talents aren't exactly put to good use.

A really mediocre movie. The story's full of holes, even ignoring the whole act of god stuff, and worst of all it's not very funny. There are 4 or 5 good moments interspersed amongst way too many stupid jokes and preachy speeches.

It was quite ok. Steve Carell was funny and reminded me at his roll in The Office by using his voices and faces. It has the honour to be called most expensive comedy , but it won't get the title of Best Comedy. The humor of supporting actors was sometimes even better than Evan's humor. Probably a good film for the family.

It's not BAD, but it's far far far from good. It's moderately watchable for the few amusing moments, but for the most part, one to pass up on unless you want something to throw on that's bland and simply background noise.

Spoiler* I don't get it why, if the "flood" is going to only affect the town, does Steve Carell need to round up all the animals on Earth? Also the movie just isn't very funny, which is unfortunate.

Inoffensive, but offensively so to the talent on screen for such a lame script. Freeman and Carell have some touching scenes though. And its good for kids. Still, they could have tried harder.

Adds nothing funny to the original, even with Steve Carell making us laugh in a couple of scenes. Although it's the kind of puritan, family comedy that doesn't fit in Carell's talent.

Steve Carell and $175 million both deserve much better than a misguided comedy that comprised primarily of jokes regarding a not-funny dance and animal poop. Watching the latter decompose would still have more entertainment value than this- at least you don't have to waste your money to watch it.

The set-up's predictable (yet another working dad neglecting his kids); the build-up is too (The Santa Clause, anyone?), but the plethora of biblical puns make it fun. The humour is mostly bland slapstick (Hill's stalker Eugene aside) but Carell's solid turn (the beard probably helped) as the guy God is seemingly screwing over gives the second act surprising dramatic credibility. Finally, though the CGI boat ride of the third act is cringe-worthy, its environmentalist slant is appreciable.

My hopes were so much higher. Carrell wasn't bad, the script was. Trailers gave away the flood which I think ruined the movie. If you thought it wasn't a real flood, you'd be really surprised. If you walk into seeing this movie thinking it's a direct sequel to Bruce Almighty, you will be disappointed. But this really is a sweet little movie. I tend to think of the Oh God movies, Dear God, Bruce and Evan Almighty as part of the same series of films. As such, I enjoyed this movie. Great family fare (and I don't like Steve Carell normally)

I don't like the too literal interpretation of Bible-stuff as it detaches from the original messages, don't like to see Steve Carell acting stupid. Animal acts are funny, but the movie lacks any intelligent jokes. $175M budget?! WTF, you could buy a religion for that money... otherwise, an established religion could easily spend this amount on a ugly movie like this to entertain its sheep.

And God told Noah that he was going to cause a flood upon the earth that would wipe out all living things. And he promised, with a rainbow in the sky as a sign, that he would never bring about a flood of that magnitude again. Evan seems to think that God is going to go back on his word; but things are not quite how he had planned. Funny, entertaining and theologically interesting.

This was disappointing. Seemingly disassociating itself from the film it is meant to be a sequel to, Evan Almighty doesn't make me laugh at all. The closest it gets is when Evan is compared to a Bee Gee. It's pretty lame and unimaginative with none of the originality of Bruce Almighty and although abstract it is pretty bog standard and linear at the same time.

Steve Carell was quite funny and sweet in this film, but what ultimately causes this one to severely fail is the sheer retarded pseudo-morality no one else but Hollywood has to infect us with, regarding God and the fact that, apparently, spending your time with your family and taking care of a dog can change the world.
