What the hell is that piano scene? That should of warned me of what was to come. After the first two excellent installments in this series reboot, this was a major misstep.

A notch below the quality of previous chapters but I wasn't as dissapointed as some other commenters seem to be. If you don't know your Evangelion backwards, you should consider re-watching the earlier ones before jumping into this as otherwise it might turn out to be a very confusing ride. Then again, that fits the story and puts you basically in Shinji's shoes. I still have high hopes for the last chapter.

I laughed through the whole god damn thing. I've seen Anno be compared to George Lucas but even Lucas didn't devote so much screentime to a sexually confused teenage mass murderer playing the piano. I knew this was going to be shit as soon as I heard there would be a time skip. Every character from the TV series is butchered, there's a bunch of new characters who do nothing, Mari's just there and does nothing and Gendo is turned to Cyclops. Sasuga Anno ya hack. It gets a 20 for being hilarious

Anno resets all character development in the middle of a movie series for no actual payoff or seemingly real reason. He then uses this reset to obtusely raise questions instead of answering anything. A 5 minute piano duet scene isn't character development, so Kaworu is as underdevleoped and boiled down to Yaoi bait as he was in the original tv show. Also the animation budget seems to be blown in the 1st action scene. The 2nd action scene is mostly poor CGI and the next hour is all hallways.

This time we are simply dropped into the middle of the action and story with no context and we are never really given the context either. I could live with that, however, the characters have changes which was jarring and the change was not in a good way. But worst of all there was a distinct lack of a cohesive story, nearly random scenes and dialogue would happen with barely any rhyme or reason making this feel more like a bad clip film or a compilation of game cut scenes than an actual movie.

A major disappointment, after the remarkable first and second entries set the groundwork for an amazing change of pace Anno once again tears down his work to rebuild it again, only without giving fans enough context to keep up. This combined with some sloppy and occasionally outright jarring characterization combines to create a film that feels half-formed and lacking in comparison to its stunning predecessors. Here's hoping the final entry takes after parts 1 and 2 rather than this.

Since when did Evangelion need a cliche, 14-year time jump? Honestly, the first two films were pretty damn good this film pretty much threw out all of the thorough characterization in its predecessors and introduced some convoluted plot with little to no explanations about anything going on. I adore the Evangelion series and two Rebuild films greatly, but I cannot condone the changes executed in this film. Regardless, the animation is great and the interaction between Shinji and Kaworu is great.

Man, I am the biggest Eva fan there is (see my EoE review) but this was just flat-out not good. This sort of premise might work with an entire series to go, but for two movies, no, I don't think so. There's a lot wrong with this film and honestly not much right, so the passable score is only due to the hope that 4.0 -- which basically needs to be a Western-style epic at this point -- redeems it. This movie makes me understand how Star Wars fans felt about the prequels. EDIT: better on rewatch.

Every film that bills itself as a "visual treat" should have to be compared to this. Stunning art direction in every facet from the bombed out ruins of a future civilization, to the quiet moments in a sterile waiting room, to the hyperkinetic mech battles. Hardly any narrative or motivation but it wouldn't be Evangelion if it wasn't confusing to the point of being nonsense. I had no expectations and I found one of the best Turn Off Your Brain And Enjoy The Pretty Colors movies of all time.

They took the series in a very interesting direction, and I actually liked this movie a lot more than people said I would. That being said, the pacing was a little weird, and considering how there wasn't supposed to be a timeskip originally, you can kinda see why.

While the first 30 minutes are breath taking and spectacular, the rest of the movie is so fucked up, gay and utterly boring to make it one of the worst i've seen this year.

A huge disappointment after the perfectly fine precursors. Character-development takes a backseat to plot-driven antics. The supporting cast is dumb as a rock (Especially Rei "Not my orders" Ayanami ...). I really hope Anno can get his s*** back together for the grand finale :/

Ok, I guess the fact that I waited so long to actually review this represents my regret in giving it a less-than-stellar score compared to the two other entries in this Re-Whatevering. I loved the opening, but when I found out what it was actually a setup for I felt rather dissapointed, as the series finally had a prime oppurtunity to adress and destroy most of the critiscism leveled against it, but like an addict it falls back into the old habit. Withholding full judgement until the final part.

This was an absolute mess. I had no idea what was going on, didn't like the art style, and just thought it was way too bleak. I understand sometimes sequels should go for broke and be different but this was just too abstract and uncomfortable after the fucking 2.0

After an entire franchise of people telling Shinji get in the robot, here's a film where people tell him NOT to get in the robot. When it serves as a meta-commentary on the franchise itself, or deals with the desire for the familiar, 3.0 offers its best material, but it lacks in the details. Of course there was no possible recovery after the ending of 2.0, but the emotional detachment of the Rebuilds is highest here. Still, the piano scene and final fight rule. Here's hoping 4.0 is even crazier.

Contrary to most, I liked the direction this 3rd instalment took in the Evangelion Rebuild, though the execution (like the other films) is a bit lacklustre. There are issues with character movitations that get brushed under the time-jump, but my major issue is with Shinji’s (or at least Spike Spencer’s English dub) phenomenal level of whining. It does reinforce his childishness and dimish his heroism, but it’s unbearably annoying. At least the concept of the saga is finally revealed.

Slow, melancholic and mostly confusing. Everything feels different, and somehow wrong, compared to part 2. Maybe that was the point though...

Eating crow here slightly, mostly because of vibes and pacing (well-timed explosions go a long way for me in action), but mostly because it's no longer a matter of "ugh why did they change that little detail and make it worse"; eeeeerverything is different, and I kinda loved it. Despite the clichés, despite the lack of stakes (oh no, everyone's even more dead), it pops when it should pop, it's chill when it should be chill, and the radically changed world is fun to discover

I was worried that the Rebuild series would be a pointless retread of the original Evangelion series - I'm relieved to learn my fears were not only misplaced but hilariously wrong. This new direction for Evangelion is such a breath of fresh air for the franchise

Not sure whether to rate this based on my initial nonplussed reaction or the deeper appreciation I gained for it after watching 4.0. I still think it’s probably the weakest rebuild, mainly due to the pacing, but there’s still some fantastic scenes and Kaworu is GOATed as usual. I feel bad for people who had to wait nine years for the conclusion to this. STAY AWAY FROM THE FUCKING ROBOT SHINJI

The most experimental entry of the tetralogy (whether intended or as a result of a troubled production) deserves praise for daring to step far outside the realm of expectations, but really should have taken at least some more time to bring its viewers up to speed.

Absolutely the most fraught of the quadrilogy, but in a way that makes sense. It feels like what happens when you, personally, reach a huge spiritual/political realization but then don't have a way to actually apply it to the world; those feelings can curdle and get weird, especially if you try to apply it and fail, but with support you can get it. Also yesssss Kaworu/Shinji cuteness and Mari being fun-badass and Asuka and Misato both being uh-*mazing* and gosh I love all these characters!!

It’s cool that they decided to take the Rebuild into an entirely different direction Jahr the way through, but it a. Confused the hell out of me, b. I didn’t like the animation style much and c. WHY THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THERE A SEXUALIZED NUDE SCENE OF A 14 YEAR OLD IN THERE?!? One should not always give all the fans all the things they want.
