Far far better than initial pairing in Manhattan Melodrama, this one is good. Maybe a bit aged in it's pat courtroom resolution but still an interesting and well done plot and esp for the thirties tackles some issues that were not to be mentioned which was, to this viewer, a (pleasant) surprise.

The actors do a fine job, but the pacing of the story and not going deeper into the emotional aspect of it's characters keeps this from being a standing-out work in the William Powell & Myrna Loy catalog. Both get caught up with deceiving people. Powell gets out of his dilemma with Rosalind Russell rather quick and painless, so much that there hardly was any point in Russell making her movie debut here at all. Loy's flirt however results in murder. Una Merkel is adorable, so there is that too.
