This is not really a sad, sad movie, but it's not really happy either. The more I think about this film, the more I'm unsure what the message was. I think it tried to be mysterious and artful, but was instead just too confusing. That said, this movie garners major points for the acting of the cast and the cinematography. The acting... WOW! And let me take this moment to cheer again for one of my fav. leading guys, Hugh Dancy - another amazing performance! And Collette! the accent was spot on!

Not entirely without merit but the storytelling was really drawn out and the message was rather simplistic. Overall it just felt very mediocre, especially the present time parts with the old lady in bed and her two daughters I couldn't give two shits about. Some of the flashback parts (which make up about 3/4 of the movie) are interesting, but probably not worth watching the movie for.

Shame on me I suppose for not learning to leave well enough alone when it comes to Michael Cunningham. Shame on me too for realizing that the movie I wanted to watch has a senile old woman get off her death bed to follow around flying insects not once but twice. Shame on us all for this "Evening" I think we all should have opted for a drunken stupor as this is a mess best left a hazy distant fever dream.

Great cast. Claire Danes was good and apparently can sing quite sweetly. A milk toast meander through a old woman's memory as she lays dying. It was jarring to be constantly yanked between the present and the past. The story tries to deal with life long regrets but in the end claims very little ever mattered. Several pointless story diversions in the present. Mostly seemed like an elaborate encouragement to live life in the moment. Well at least Redgrave got to act with her daughter Natasha.

Slow story, a more of real life story, changes its flavour throughout the course

This movie got ONE nominee: "Movie you wanted to Love, but just couldn't" - that describes it pretty well...

"Like Stephen Daldry's The Hours, Evening's pseudo-intellectual tone hardly disguises its presumptions about female identity." - Ed Gonzalez

A strong cast and good cinematography but ultimately a dull film with no sense of purpose.

The best and most moving parts were, as the film itself suggests, the ones that seemed the most ordinary. Other than that it was mainly interesting though somewhat longer than I liked. The music and cinematography were gorgeous.

Another entry in the dying-woman-reflects-on-her-life genre, a bit more interesting than most. I often find the writing very strange--it's rather a mess, but there's something rather lovely here, too. Vanessa Redgrave in "the Vanessa Redgrave role" (luminous, otherworldly woman, often dying), and a generally excellent cast that can actually act. Worth sitting through, though, for the scene near the end where Claire Danes sings "I See the Moon" to her girls--it's something suspended in time..
