Leave it to Age and Scarpelli to find so much hearty (never actually dark) humor in such bleak subject matter. Without it, we'd be left with a heavy and depressing WWII film, but also, their comedy always rings so true to life that it genuinely adds to the realism. I can actually imagine many of these bittersweet situations happening. Sordi is incredible as always, and a great supporting cast includes a prominent Serge Reggiani and Italian-dubbed Martin Balsam (!).
