Dazed and Confused was cozy and enjoyable, this was just grating. I prefer not to spend my time watching a bunch of chauvinistic sports-obsessed douchebros try to get laid, but maybe I'm just weird. [Adjusts glasses, starts new game of Stellaris]

As someone who would never fit in with this group of characters, I enjoyed the inclusive way Linklater wrote and directed this film. The way each scene is shot and edited makes you feel part of every joke and jab. Even though the moments might not be emotionally deep or profound, they feel real. We never get to know any of these character's insecurities, so inserting more than superficial conflict would feel cheap.

This is by far the laziest Linklater I've seen. You can see the framework for what he wanted to do and ended up just spreading everything too thin and came up with nothing in particular. The girl who was clearly supposed to be charming was boring and droned on about nothing, and the likeable characters were too shallow and just 'accepted'. Nostalgia and references aren't content. I wanted to like it but it was just kind of boring.

This is little more than a romp down memory lane & fails to provide much reason for being beyond that. It lacked follow through. There were many humorous moments. Good cast. Everybody wants to get laid, which is no great revelation. Zoey Deutch was cute. Blake Jenner was handsome. Characters in general seemed a good cross section & were authentically odd. Great music & good production quality. I enjoyed reliving a few moments of my teenage years from the late 1970's. Likeable but hollow.

Maybe we only love Van Halen because the machine tells us to, but what Willoughby leaves out is that this doesn't make Van Halen any less great. In a way, it's an apt metaphor for the characters that populate this film - I probably wouldn't be friends with them in real life, and they probably wouldn't like me either, but I was glad to spend 2 hours in their presence.

What initially seems like an enjoyable hangout movie set in 1980 is actually deeper. The movie is set during the transitional time between the 70s and the 80s as the characters are in their transitional time between adolescence and adulthood.

A joyous, funny and completely intoxicating slice of eighties Americana that has a loose and casual feel to it. However, the portrayal of the milieu in this time and place is very precise indeed, I should think. In fact, a lot of it probably won't ever change. The film stars many excellent, soon no longer unknown actors (the charismatic Glen Powell is the standout), and I had a blast partying and hanging out with all of Linklater's deftly drawn characters. One of my new favorite hangout movies.

It is exactly the smile-inducing slice of life you expected it to be. Not as organic as Linklater's best shit (see 'Before' trilogy) but I actually found it much more complete than Dazed & Confused. It is aggressively likeable.

Linklater offers a gentle critique to his college years, slowly building toward a more chastened memory of that time--especially the treatment of women. On its face, the film is a sex comedy, its male leads wanting nothing more than to get together with someone, anyone...and often succeeding. However, the film's view of women shifts toward something more human, even while retaining its exuberant sense of fun.

I didn't have the same problems with the main character as many - he's revealed to have a thorough philosophy on the world (his Sisyphus monologue) which allows him to remain relatively uncombative in his social world. The lack of drama is replaced by mannerisms, clashing ideologies, and an abundance of culture. In other words, a Richard Linklater movie. Should be no surprise to anyone familiar with the man's work. As for comparisons to his other work - another unsuspecting slice of perfection

It has its moments but it's less expansive, less angsty, and less introspective than the masterpiece the filmmakers and marketers have determined they must hitch their wagon to. There's exceptional casting and mostly great characters. I just wish the protagonist had any inner conflict whatsoever; dude just breezes through the movie like he's got everything figured out.

Fun, but given all the acclaim heaped on this (& its predecessor) it would appear most critics consider it a masterpiece (& "hilarious") to recreate the kind of fun times they had when they were young & stupid, but have the same sophomoric minds implausibly comment on what's occurring through a sociological lens. It's a very rose-colored look into the past as well, w/ races & wildly different cultural groups displaying an open-mindedness that isn't remotely realistic at all now, never mind then.

A decent movie on it's own, but after watching it I was kind of disappointed since I think I compared it to Dazed and Confused too much, and unfortunately it's nowhere near as brilliant. While I enjoyed the movie for the most part, it just seemed a little off: hollow characters, everything is too perfect and glossy and at times the dialogs feel extremely fake. A very joyful movie without substance

Felt a lot like it was trying to recreate the same feel as Dazed & Confused, but I didn't connect as much. In contrast to the first day of summer timeline, we are treated to the first day of school approaching, and as such, the freewheeling shenanigans felt less urgent and more indulgent. Also in contrast, this time a paddle is broken against a wall instead of on the ground. They traded spanking for Ping Pong, and somehow didn't win me over.

I love Richard Linklater, but what the hell is this? Misogynistic assholes, a storyline that repeats itself for no good reason, and the potential for something great that goes nowhere. The ticking time clock to the first day of school is great, but he doesn't seem to take advantage of it. And a cast of all white guys with one token black guy? Seriously? I just found none of these characters interesting or compelling. Their pursuits were just childlike. This does not live up to Dazed and Confused

Linklater delivers the goods again. Full of cartoonish but all too real characters you'll be able to pick out in a lineup from your own life. I will say this though: Linklater really likes that same kind of shaggy hair protagonist from Dazed and Boyhood. I'll watch this again in some years.

A love letter to that great bubble butt that all baseball boys have. There are some stellar performances in there too and it's directed wonderfully. But, let's be real, Linklater really just directed a homoerotic wet dream with some sweet oldies in it and I'm 100% here for it. Anyway, let's throw out any credibility I have as an amateur reviewer and get back to my favorite subject, men with bubble butts...

Linklater's tribute to 80s sex comedies has some solid characters, but it's lacking the depth of his other films. What's left is the comedy and sex from those classic films and there isn't much of that here -- some, yes, and it is a relatively brisk two hours, but still not what it could have been.

Have Linklater movies always been this... shallow? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, which I'm guessing was the point, but I'm sure I remember a point in time when Linklater's movies had something to say. The shameless citing of Camus and pretending it was a character's own original thought was... weird. Anyways, this movie is entertaining, funny and ultra-chill, which is definitely the kind of movie you need sometimes. Still, I can't shake the feeling that this is Linklater on automatic.

I enjoyed it just fine, but it's not an incredible movie. First of all, it wasn't as funny as I had hoped; it has a few great lines scattered throughout but it needed more consistency. Even though I thought the story was passable, the beginning bit left me feeling cold. It wasn't until I started to gel with these characters that the movie opened up and I became more engrossed. Unfortunately, by that time we were at least halfway through. Finn is fantastic and charming.

Like Linklater's other great slice of life movies, it really excels at simultaneously evoking a time and a place, but also trafficking in universal characters, relationships, and emotions. The only real knock I have is the lead protagonist--whose character had no conflict and no real character arc, plus I wasn't a big fan of the performance. Really interested to see this a second time and see if has the rewatchability to become a classic.

It might be easy to dismiss this as a superficial retread of Dazed & Confused, but that's a mistake. This film adheres to a pattern and theme which is altogether different than the former's laissez-faire attitude. The task of fitting in is Sisyphean; a perpetual rotation of cliques and genres, parlor games and psychological sparring. Linklater's charm is the optimism of youth; these characters come of age with bright eyes. "Be yourself" is trite, but it's a conclusion come by entertainingly.

Just like "Dazed and Confused" before this, it's about getting laid and partying, only this time we've moved on to college. The film is a tad over written, and filled with the usual philosophical rhetoric you've come to expect from a Linklater film, although he's an expert at capturing a moment in time, allowing you to experience a bye gone era first hand. With that being said, it works most of the time (I mean nobody wants to watch a movie about doing taxes and paying bills...or do they?)

I really appreciate Richard Linklater's perspective, but this film is amazingly unpleasant. I don't understand how someone who makes films with such depth can be the author of this one-dimensional film. Maybe I missed something, but the characters just suck and have no redeeming qualities. It's that simple. Linklater has always worked with flawed characters, and he's always been very talented at getting the viewer to sympathize with most of them in some way. He really failed to do that here.

It really does feel like a sequel to the spirit of Dazed and Confused. Perhaps inevitably, it's not as good. But I enjoyed it for what it was - a low-stakes, feel-good college movie. The cast is good and they did a good job of presenting a bunch of fun, likable, interesting characters in a comparatively short time. I kind of think maybe they should've made this a mini-series, but it works well enough as a film. I thought this was a nice movie, though, admittedly, not Linklater's best.

Like a male fantasy of college that didn't start out with much direction but turns into a...romance? It was jarring to me to see the '80s weren't that much different from today as far as the women's clothing. Not sure what that says about fashion or about me. Jay MVP. Meandering slice-of-life is fun in fits and starts, but sputtering pacing, and a lack of insight into its (too large) cast of characters, dulls the shine. Might be of greater interest to those who want to relive juvenile exploits, and to its credit its good nature acts as a sharp rebuke to the sometimes nasty undercurrent of misogyny which plagues contemporary (and 1980s) 'bro' comedies. The developing romance between Jenner and Deutch is genuinely sweet, and the highpoint of the movie.

While it's an entertaining enough slice of the 80's, I never felt connected to the characters like I did with Dazed and Confused. I think this was partly due to the fact that we were focusing on one subset of a clique as opposed to the various ones we saw in DaC. Linklater made a mistake by claiming it was a spiritual cousin to Dazed and Confused: it set up completely unrealistic expectations. It's a funny film full of dude bro humour, but it rarely goes beneath the surface, and it lacks the resonance of Dazed because of its reduced scope; in Dazed we got a glimpse of an entire world--school as microcosm--E.W.S is a bunch of jock like guys crammed together in the same house fighting for space. At least they're likeable, and it is better than Boyhood.

A fun movie with feelgood atmosphere to spare. I don't know if I'll ever quite buy a bunch of 25-30-year-olds posing as undergrads, but that seems to be the American Way. The casting was very good anyway. A lot of the characters were memorable, and scenes were fun and goofy without having many laugh-out-loud jokes. The movie doesn't reach the insanity of other college hijinks films, but effectively captures a feeling of an era of fun, friends, partying and minimal responsibility. Which is ok.

"Fuckwithery: The Movie". This aesthetic was manipulating me from frame one, and I couldn't care less. I bought in hook, line, and sinker, to God himself Richard Linklater. This is 100% style over substance from the get-go, and I couldn't care less. Jocks have feelings, too -- not just partying and playing baseball and talking about the girls they want. From party to party -- disco, country, punk --, from tribe to tribe -- ball players, theater groups, punksters --, from nonsense to weird and philosophical conversations, Linklater creates his own early 1980s Texas college environment -- one that not specifically exists, but that plays beautifully through dramas, jokes and anxieties of yough right in the days before class starts.

An entertaining movie, great film making and set-design - I felt squarely orientated in that period. The pace and high number of characters was quite frenetic, though I settled into that quite late on, once dynamics started emerging - by which time it was resolving. Nice to watch if you are not expecting to engage too fully. The romance or comedy didn't really emerge strongly. The characters are cast as caricatures of cool, which kept them at a distance for me. Linklater's love letter to the spirit of the late 70's/early 80's is full of fun characters with a great rapport; has a meandering, nostalgic pace; and is riddled with hijinks that manage to be hilarious without being over-the-top. It isn't the freshest take on the genre, but it is a surprisingly thoughtful one.

Linklater, again, succeeds in making a film that is wonderful in its simplicity. The metaphors are familiar, grounded in its soundtrack, but the refreshing hijinks are entertaining and familiar. A brisk and enjoyable two hours.

Time and time again, Glen Powell never fails to make me gay and fall in love with his character. FAK.
