Cronin pops off a handful of thrilling sequences, like reimagining the limbs of the infamous tree attack from The Evil Dead as elevator wires or shooting an action sequence through a keyhole, with the players zipping in and out of the frame. A few grace notes, no surprises. It’ll do. But is it wrong to ask for something more?

My favorite horror franchise came back with a bang. Lee Cronin just gets it. For me, this equally scary and hilarious. The scares were GENUINELY scary, but I did laugh OUT LOUD on occasion as well. The family dynamic added some better stakes than the other movies, and there’s some really good tension and loads of gore. The finale was insane and I loved it. Weird character choices aside, this was pretty much the best I could have gotten from another Evil Dead film. A well-paced, bloody good time.

The setup in a shitty warehouse apartment is a proper throwback, and the characters are realized just enough to start caring, because once the Deadites drop, it really does not stop: The last hour is just unrelenting, bloody, chaotic carnage. I hazard I can't recall a recent American horror film putting children in so much harm's way, but IMO, that makes it better. The last 20 minutes is the most twisted and fucked up Mommy-issues horror since Alien: Resurrection, and better.

Excruciatingly crappy run-of-the-mill supernatural gorefest for kids. Nobody's behavior makes sense, and the action is way too dull and contrived to have any effect. The mother looks like the kid from "Smile" (not only in the movie poster). It's at its most obnoxious when it suddenly remembers its namesake and tries to replicate 1980s Evil Dead special effects or Sam Raimi camera tricks.

Maybe my bar is set low after the disappointment that was 2013's Evil Dead remake, but I had a great time with this one. It had enough Raimi flavor to it to make it seem like a proper Evil Dead flick. Let the deadites have fun and be camp, and this film did that! Really fun inventive ideas too. And a lot of good homages to Ash without feeling like just a genderbent version. "DEAD BY DAWN! DEAD BY DAWN!"

Really wasn't working for me at first with its over-glossy cinematography, and too-present score, and I could just SEE the grubby fingerprints of Warner Bros. executives all over it. An Evil Dead film shouldn't feel like this much of a studio product. Luckily, it started to win me over a little in the second half. There was a solid 20-30-minute stretch that I was really grooving with while the rest either left me numb or felt serviceable if a bit generic

A sort of middle of the road approach to resurrecting this franchise, that gets the tone (bonkers over the top gore) right but failed to utilize the setting particularly well, and rushes through the proceedings with little time to build up the scares properly. Excellent camera and sound work though.

I was fully expecting to like this based on the early buzz, but I ended up being disappointed. Moving the location to an apartment complex was refreshing, but they don't utilize it much as it's mainly set in one apartment, corridor and parking hall. At times, the film tries to mimic the style of the previous films, but it's more nihilistic and lacks Raimi's humor. I also didn't care about any of the characters. Kudos for the gore, but the film is no match for the original trilogy.

Would it have been better without the Evil Dead title and the unnecessary callbacks? yea it would but nobody is gonna do it like Raimi so maybe we all need to let that go and enjoy what’s here. It delivers some genuinely insane moments and more gore than I’ve seen in the mainstream in a long time.

The problem of new-gen Evil Dead movies and many other new era horror movies is they are so serious. Those films need to be B-films with A-Tier thrill and fun. Also being trapped in a building with multiple possible exits is not even close to being trapped in an endless forest.

There's some interesting things to look at at times and the main zombie mom does a fantastic job but this is a bore. Not scary, barely connected to the Evil Dead franchise and I dislike the move to an apartment building.

This one was just so much horrific fun. All that gore, the straightforward plot, the setting being different from the originals, it has all the things going for it if you're just looking for a bit of gore and thrills. Super creepy setting and when the movie gets going, you get all the things from possessed walk to blood elevator, chainsaw and human leather-bound book. It delivers what it promises.

Works well as another remake of the classic horror film but the shift to an urban setting doesn't quite do enough to innovate beyond the franchise's formula as one might initially hope.

A handful of supernatural horror scenes familiar from the original Evil Dead franchise. There was no story to tell, and he put one of the lamest frame stories into it. Overall, it was refreshing to see a movie after a long time with no sense.

It's certainly a good horror movie with the amount of gore, profanity and, well, evil, that Evil Dead fans could want. I think it loses something with not having Ash, even though I did appreciate the references. I'd watch another one while not being super excited for it.

Throwback to the mid 2000s with its brutality. When they show someone getting scalped you know it’s going to be on the nastier side. While never tense or particularly scary it does have a lot of imagery that sticks with you. Anything shot through the doors peephole creeped my out.

After the cheap-looking opening and the introduction to the lame-ass family, I almost turned it off but decided to keep going to give it a fair chance. Halfway through the movie and it finally starts to get interesting but it doesn't feel like an Evil Dead movie at all, not like the originals or the remake, it just feels more generic and Blumhouse than anything else. I think having kids involved in this was a bad idea and whenever the film did a call back to the original movie it fell flat.

A rather generic polished horror film that borrows Raimi's camera moves to remind viewers that it is in fact a legitimate entry into the series rather than a Blumhouse style knock off.The casting of Sutherland was somewhat inspired as models do often look creepy in less familiar contexts, and her performance is quite good, but it lacks Raimi's creativity, and its central conceit of a single mother trying to kill her offspring had more potential than perhaps Cronin realised or cared to admit.

Spoiler review, warning! I imagine the first draft of the script had the mother addicted to opium, because the narrative as we saw on the screen is confusing and shallow. Possession as a metaphor for addiction would make so much more sense. What a weird mess of a movie.

If I had to make a list of my 18 favourite films, Evil Dead II would be 14th. I like the original series, specifically EDII and AOD, because of their goofiness. A lot of people seem to enjoy both this and Alvarez's Evil Dead's shift to being more dark and gruesome, but it's just not my bag, baby. Part of this is my fault. My partner said we could turn this off 40 minutes into it, but I said, "It is my job as an esteemed Criticker critic to share my thoughts!"

Maybe not the best of the franchise, but I think it could qualify as the most tense. I do think it could’ve been a bit more unrelenting, and the gore varied in effectiveness. But the family dynamic really made the stakes feel a lot higher, and the (main) characters felt more realistic than most other horror movies. It’s also clear that Lee Cronin clearly cares about the franchise. I don’t know if I’d want to rewatch it, but it helps confirm this as one of the most consistent horror franchises.

Wow, Criticker really expected me to love this. I didn't expect to, and I didn't, but I do appreciate some of what this was going for. The gore is mostly satisfying and turned up to 11. I did love the camera work harkening back to Raimi, but since I'm no bastion of the Evil Dead franchise and the movie very much wanted to "get to the gore", I couldn't care less about these characters or what was happening to them aside from very surface-level stuff. A lot of interesting & scary visuals, though!

The real horror is abandoning those pizzas, as they were still perfectly edible. But seriously this one is okay. Alyssa Sutherland is pretty creepy. The elevator scene is nice. Most of it works fine but the little chats between the carnage are about 7/10 on a scale of dumbness.

Very solid sequel. Takes a while to get going and has some familiar beats to the franchise, but the apartment setup and the family dynamics make things a bit more interesting, as well as the deaths and references. Nicely shot and despite some dumb character moments here and there, not enough to ruin the experience.

Enjoyed it way more than I thought I would, but I think you have to know what you're in for. It's a pretty good mix of creepy, over-the-top violence that makes you recoil, and ridiculousness. Not quite as comical as I remember the old movies being, but still has (dark) laughs. Alyssa Sutherland did an incredible job. The biggest criticism I have would be a certain aspect of the ending that I think didn't really work well, but otherwise I was still pretty thoroughly entertained.

In a lot of ways, Evil Dead Rise feels like a nod to the franchise’s previous entries. Wether it’s the sequences being slightly altered or throwback cinematography, it feels it’s still clinched into the universe. Props to Cronin for that, it seems like he is a fan of the material. However, that’s also its biggest detraction. Aside from a new setting, it doesn’t step outside its box. It’s missing some flair or oomph to it, and while satisfying, still feels like we’re stalling at this point.

I think this one might’ve caught me when I wasn’t massively in the mood for it, but overall the piecemeal mix of spewing blood, possession, contorting bodies and so on just all kind of felt been there done that to me - a patchwork horror movie. I think overall supernatural horror movies are hit or miss for me. A few are top tier, but overall maybe I prefer the slashers and whatnot that purportedly take place more in the real world.

What a blast. Certainly didn't expect to like so much, given I barely remember the 2013 film. But it's just pretty good how the film balances its 80s horror reverence -- drone opening scene, elevator full of blood -- with true, frontal contemporary sadistic horror. Gotta love how it's also about the dissolution of a family and what you get after that -- you just walk away alive. I hope Cronin gets to make tons of these.

Don't come to this looking for actual Evil Dead legacy. This film borrows some of the lore, but otherwise, it's just your standard demons wreaking havoc on a family just this time it's in a shitty apartment complex. It DOES accomplish what it sets out to do, but... this ain't Evil Dead as you know it. This is it's dead corpse being paraded around for yet another lifeless franchise rehash. Not bad, but not really good either. Nicely filmed, great sets, decent acting. Just poor plot.

Açılış sahnesinin harika olduğu film, 1 gün önceden başlıyor. 3 çocuğu ile yaşayan annemizin evine, teyze geliyor. Deprem olunca, ailenin oğlu, gizli kasadan 1 kitap ve plaklar ortaya çıkıyor. Şeytanın kitabını okuyan ve dinleyen oğlumuzun annesine musallat oluyor. Katliam başlıyor. Kalan sağlam bizimdir mantığıyla ilerleyen film, apartman dairesinde yaşanan vahşeti gözümüze soka soka izletiyor. Bol kanlı asansör sahnesine bayıldım. Filmin sonunda, ağaç biçme kerestesi. Perfect example of why almost all of the movies from the last 10+ years are an absolute waste of lifetime. Untalented people everywhere, bad in almost every aspect, terrible script, awful dialogues, unlikable and forgettable characters who do illogical things because the writers don't know how the world works or worked! Abysmal bad acting, imagine suffering terrible injuries and practically not even reacting to them with more than a shrug of the shoulders and the like.

Executing the basic "Evil Dead" formula in an apartment with the aesthetics of a modern possession horror junker doesn't really add anything new or interesting to the franchise. The film's fine, but I found myself frequently wishing it would just move along and get to the end.

Way better than I thought it would be. This revival of the franchise seems to get what made the original film work and, even though it has a much bigger budget, it still manages, for the most part, to capture the constant feeling of claustrophobic dread that the original had throughout. I like how the film builds just enough of the story, but also doesn't mess around with long-winded lore and exposition. Once the possession starts, similar to the original, it's a nonstop, pretty scary ride!

"Evil Dead Rise" excels in many areas, particularly in its technical aspects and the introduction of new series lore. However, the relentless cruelty towards its female characters makes it difficult to recommend wholeheartedly. While it may satisfy the cravings of hardcore horror and gore enthusiasts, the excessive brutality may leave others questioning the need for such extreme violence against women.

Saw it in a theatre full of giggly teens. After the show, overheard one teen girl in the hall ask another what she's seeing: "I just saw 'Evil'...something. It was really scary!" It was a pretty live crowd though, lots of "NOOoo don't open the door!!!" etc. I found it lacked nearly all the humour and fun of the good ol' Sam Raimi days though. So a big disappointment for me.

it seems to me that in the 80s, going to watch all that slasher garbage was a punk thing. New, weird, raw, shitty, from the gut, horrible, crass... That isn't really the case nowadays. This is that kind of punk, though. It isn't well acted, well cast, well written, well shot or anything (although the music is as perfect as can be for an Evil Dead), but is nasty, disgusting, demonic and evil. Or at least it's genuinely trying to be. So, kudos for that. Long story short.

A definite improvement. Come on, Army of Darkness gave you the opening you needed to take the basic Evil Dead story and drop it in any context you want, why stick with the cabin? Why NOT essentially mash it up with Dark Water? OK, so the character work is all shorthand, but it keeps the relentless grimness of the first remake and gives it a bit more life, a bit more resonance, a few new setpieces to work with. Really enjoyed it.
