When strangers Julio and Julia wake up together, groggy and hung-over from the night before, the last thing they are expecting is to discover that an alien invasion has taken place. In Extraterrestre, Nacho Vigalondo melds science fiction, romance and black comedy in his latest feature about the darkly fascinating aspects of the human psyche. (tiff.net)

I'm not a huge fan of these genre-bending efforts. I say, if you do humour, do it laugh-out-loud; if you do sci-fi, do it freaky; if you do suspense, make your audience beg for mercy. This postmodern War of the Worlds sitcom fails on all counts. I could root for some of the characters but not the circuitous elliptical journey Vigalondo wants to tread. I'm not sure this director will ever make a film half as good as Timecrimes. I largely regret giving this one a go.

A nice concept and some mostly consistent humor, but just a bit boring.

Mediocre movie with unresolved pretensions, sometimes a funny character is enough to leave the movie behind...Michelle Jenner, hot!

"In almost every respect, Extraterrestrial is an exceptional and traditional romantic comedy. It just happens to be set during an alien invasion." - Calum Marsh

The ending is a bit of a letdown but there were at least two or three funny scenes in this atypical genre movie.
