Not a great film but it is deeply misunderstood. Multiple cues early on imply an intent for an American giallo: a witness to murder, a personal connection to a killer, a series of murders, a slasher revealed - all in a fantastic, agitated environment that may just be Purgatory. It has lofty ambitions. But it's all done in a style so 90's it had to marinate in its 90's for three years before being released in 2002, which by then wanted nothing to do with 90's. It's a 90's nightmare.

E.S.Y sat on the shelf for 3 years and was unceremoniously dumped by Universal, but the film isn't terrible by any means, just ordinary. Stallone is surprisingly effective as a grief sticken cop who gets sent to an isolated clinic for rehabilitation where a murderer is on the prowl. Gillespie's direction is fine, and he makes commendable use of its atmospheric setting, but the characters lack the psychological depth necessary to create sufficient tension, and the killer is weakly drawn.

Why is it so underestimated? It is not a masterpiece, but I wasn't bored.

so i thought this was a thriller turns out it's just a slasher that wishes it wasn't a slasher and lacks imagination. stallone, believe it or not, does a great job in the first 30 minutes or so when he's required to emote over his murdered wife and his subsequent alcoholism...but then the movie degrades into subpar slasher and you KNOW who's the bad guy as soon as you see him without any clues whatsoever. oh and no deaths were cool to make up for any of this.

Stallone and a mostly outstanding cast of mostly character actors mostly attempt to outlast a serial killer of mostly cops while in a snowbound rehab for cops. Mostly. In addition to the physical threat of the killer, the script hilariously shoe-horns in a time threat in the form of the incredibly well-preserved alcoholic inpatients potentially going into "grand mal seizures" from the DTs all at the same time because their meds are locked away. This is, unfortunately, abandoned immediately.
