Eyes Without a Face without a prayer.

Rare Jess Franco flick with almost no nudity, this one is a gory horror tale about a mad plastic surgeon who is trying to cure his sister's horribly burned face. He and his assistant kidnap and kill beautiful women to use their skin for transplants, but when a private dick starts investigating the disappearance of one of their victims, their plans begin to unravel. It's stupid, but there's lots of hot babes and splashy gore and a geriatric Nazi surgeon, so it's a pretty good time.

A slightly daft but enjoyable reworking of Eyes Without a Face. Franco eschews his usual sleaze, but there's still a decent gore level and he at least attempts to keep it serious. The committed cast certainly helped this along. There are a few mis-steps along the way (the ubercamp fashion guy, the very ropey dialogue, the shoddy science), but this was largely decent. That being said, if I hear the theme song one more time I may go on a killing spree myself.

Franco gets a real budget to work with, and he assembles this wonderful Euro-sleaze all-star cast to take another run at "Eyes Without a Face", this time all dolled up with 80's style and a ton of gore. I kind of love the result. It's still pretty cheap, but really, if you have any taste for Euro-sleaze, this is a gold mine. Stéphane Audran also pops by to get a syringe driven into her eye.

Sem face estreava há 35 anos na Coreia do Sul. Franco já tinha sido full Franju no seu Dr. Orloff de 61 que obviamente era muito mais domesticado do que esse frenesi oitentista. No final das contas esse fica sendo um dos melhores filmes do Franco. Box Versátil Obras-primas do Terror Anos 80 volume 3.

Something I never thought I'd see: a somewhat decent Jess Franco movie. Also helped that Helmut Berger was pretty hot.
