As always in her late documentaries, Varda is a likeable subject, although the insights here are a little slim and the tone has a slight whiff of sentimentality. Not a good advertisement for Godard.

It's okay Jean-Luc, I wouldn't have let this senile old lady and her insufferable protege into my house either.

Charming and thoroughly enjoyable tour of the countryside with Varda and JR; perhaps lacking real substantive insight but their journey unearths some fascinating characters and stories, and some genuinely moving and emotional moments. Ruminations on the passing of time and the lasting value of 'art' are ideas to ponder; the bittersweet finale involving an enigmatic third party is a somewhat strange note to end on.

It's rare to see a movie that is of truly high quality and also fits the description "feel-good". It'll give you warm fuzzies without making you feel dirty afterwards. And I defy you to not want Agnes Varda as your grandma after watching this.

What a pleasant, wandering journey through working-class villages in France as we also get to learn more about these 2 wonderful artists.

The past holds many truths and treasured memories for us all and it felt beautiful watching a visual art form like photography bridge past and present seamlessly together, making that past feel fresh and alive again. Also, Agnès Varda and Jr. need their own buddy cop movie franchise.

the abbey road reference on the poster says everything you need to know about what a cutely nostalgic middle aged BBC documentary this is. lol at godard though.

There's something so powerful about the human face, and making it part of a landscape - whether a physical or a cinematic one. Two artists with more than half a century separating them travel a land that's changed enormously in their lifetimes, chronicling the constant humanity of it. Also, Godard unsurprisingly turns out to be a jerk.

A nice and delightful enough road doco about a cool photo-lab-van that can print out photos bigger than the subjects within them, though this never muses on that quality, instead focusing on more casual ideas. Agnes and Jr are rather welcoming hosts for this doco, and they are taken to some intriguing places to do some intriguing things to these areas and the people that inhabit them (or are brought to them) -- as cool as it is to see all this, it doesn't develop into anything too memorable.

I don't know what their purpose was. Is it a tour where our celebrities bestow their grace and goodwill upon the helpless peasants? What is the practical-aesthetic-political ends of this kind of public installation? Why do we have Varda's ex-boyfriend on an old bunker. A socialist party in Germany had a motto: "paint the concrete with flowers. It is still concrete." Only thing making me happy is a non-existent Godard. I couldn't endire his asshole narcissism. People like this beacuse of Varda.

cute, varda the wise woman and her simple photo-friend. you didn't get godard that's fine but you could still have thrown a bit more (film-)socialisme into the mix.

This is a delightfully playful jaunt through France with Varda and J.R. indulging their passion for the visual arts and strengthening their already close bond. The ghosts of the French New Wave constantly hovering here and there, except for Godard who is very much present in his arsholery.

Pleasant documentary about this cross-generational duo of artists/journalists peeling back the layers of society and discovering some old-fashioned truths about people and their places, or places and their people, through the medium of portrait photography and large-scale reprinting.

A quiet, contemplative tour of rural France with little plot or tangible substance. We get to know our guides, and the people they meet. Ultimately it is soulful and a tour worth taking.
