Callum Keith Rennie plays Jim Field, the loud-mouthed, domineering patriarch who has intimidated his wife Mary into a catatonic state of alcoholism and depression. Norma is the oldest, most responsible daughter; she is overburdened and preoccupied by events from the past. I must have seen enough Canadian indie cinema to last me a lifetime now. This is a pretty standard family drama that's boosted by strong all-round performances, a well realised period setting and some good cinematography. Scott deserved whatever award-i've-never-heard-of for best director. It's quite interesting to see how soon after "Ginger Snaps" Katharine Isabelle was typecast as the moody, rebellious teenager. It's a good job she plays it well.
