Fanny

Fanny's acting is a pain to watch yet even that can't harm this marvellous film.

This has little of the charm present in Marius. As the characters deal with the fallout of the first film, the drama ramps up, and boy does it ever ramp up. Less humor and lots more flailing melodrama. The higher stakes are interesting, but lend the movie a much heavier feel that contrasts too harshly with the previous one. And Allégret is a poor substitute for Korda. The editing is clunky and the camerawork is often shoddy. The saving grace is Raimu, who again brings such compassion to Cesar.

Although I would not call these films realistic, it feels like everything important about real everyday life is captured in these films.

I know many consider the 'Fanny-Trilogy' a classic, but I'm struggling to enjoy them to the same extent as others do. The main reason for that is that I feel there is maximum 30 minutes worth of story and 1 1/2 hours of non-stop talk in every which way around that. It was the same with Marius as with this one. Blah blah blah..... well, maybe it's the kind of movies that'll grow on me. I did find Fanny less annoying then Marius (1931), maybe because I'm starting to know the characters lives.
