Still Disney's most ambitious artistic achievement, the purest marriage of music and animation ever committed to celluloid. Richly rewarding for the maturing animation fan.

A masterpiece of artistic expression. There is no over-arching story to "Fantasia" and there doesn't need to be. "Fantasia" is all about the music; fitting, considering that the music is the central point of the film. Each segment in "Fantasia" could almost be viewed as an animated ballet: there is no speaking, only music and movement perfectly synchronized to create art. "Fantasia" is truly the most underrated Disney film. I'd probably go as far as to say that it's Walt Disney's masterpiece.

As a child, I hated this film and found it interminably boring; watching it for the first time as an adult some 20 years later, my feelings are much more mixed. I love the concept and brazenly experimental and formalistic animation, I like Taylor's narration, but the piece as a whole is still kinda boring, with some segments really feeling like they drag forever. Best Segment: Dancing Fairies in the Nutcraker Suite. Worst Segment: The Rite of Spring

Extraordinary animated feature marks one of the high points of Disney's achievements in theatrical films. The best of the seven sequences are "Night on Bald Mountain" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (starring Mickey Mouse!), but all of them have achieved a classic reputation.

Audacious, immensely creative, and far ahead of its time, Disney's "Fantasia" is truly a piece of art in every definition of the word, having set a bar that has rarely since been met for how masterfully beautiful animation could be--despite this only being Disney's third picture.

I think it's important to remember Fantasia as an achievement... and an impressive one at that. I find the concept itself to be overwhelmingly fascinating. Creating a visual score to already famous pieces (for the most part), and in usual Disney fashion, they are all beautifully animated, and mostly interesting, especially the obvious Sorcerer's Apprentice, and The Night on Bald Mountain. An important piece of film, to say the least

Bored the hell out of me as a kid, but I just rewatched it and it was a wonderful piece of art, though not entirely my cup of tea. While the pieces vary in grandeur they're all quality music paired with creative and interesting visuals. My biggest problem is that each piece is really a short film of it's own and watching the whole thing through gets a bit tiring, although the short interludes in between the pieces are well done.

Can something be pretentious and low-brow at the same time? Apparently so. Perhaps what really bothers me about this is that Disney really thought he was doing the world a favor by making it.

The first few segments and the last three are awesome. The middle two - Rite of Spring and The Pastoral Symphony, are not very interesting and make the film drag quite a bit. The brief appearance of a couple of freaky African caricatures didn't help either. At least the movie ended strongly with the fantastic Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria bits.

A very strong Disney animation to music. Some of the scenes really are brilliant classics. On the whole it's a bit up and down and you'll probably find favourites and a few that don't strike you so much.

An incredibly ambitious and bold creation. As a movie, well it isn't one really. As a musical and animation tour de force, it's outstanding. At 2+ hours it can be hard to sit through, and some of the segments tend to drag between the highlights of The Sorceror's Apprentice and Night on Bald Mountain. The trite spoken introductions to each piece are also irritating and somewhat condescending. But as a testament to the creative drive and vision of one man, it's unmatched. Also, centaur boobs.

I just noticed that according to my rankings, I rate movies with classical music in them very highly. This film is why. In fact, it's not a stretch to say that it's had a greater influence on my film taste than anything else because I watched it religiously as a kid. It still remains just as spectacular.

Nudity, ultra-violence, classical music and a humble narrator to guide you through a series of trippy events - Sounds familiar? Well, yes, but nevermind A Clockwork Orange. This experiment is lacking any coherence aside from 'the vision', which would have worked better with shorts (see "What's Opera, Doc?"/"Rabbit of Seville" - both superior). Interesting in parts and who else but Disney would make centaurs hot? Foreshadowing, of course, The Little Mermaid and her strange appeal

A legendary classic. Nothing like this has ever been done, before or since. The animation is supremely imaginative, and the Sorcerer's Apprentice scene is one of my favorite scenes from all of cinema. I suppose you could criticize the music selection for being too pedestrian, but they had enough balls to include Stravinsky and Mussorgsky, so no complaints here. Possibly the greatest "music" film ever made.

(2014-15 Disneython #3:) To some extent I'd say I respected it more than truly loved it, but it is an overall enchanting experience. (Me and the fiancée also watched it while on mind-altering substances, which, for this particular film, works really well). The Sorcerer's Apprentice is an all-time classic segment, and the dinosaurs and finale with the demon are pretty cool too.

i thought of praising disney for experimenting, even if it were mostly uninspired. but then this fucking ugly ass white dude appears and starts talking to me. what? THIS IS A NEW CINEMATIC ENTERTAINMENT, he exclaims. there are three types of music: one that tells a definite story, another that doesn't but still produces images, and the last which is music for its own sake. ABSOLUTE MUSIC. toccata and fugue is an example of this last one. look at the title. it doesn't mean anything! so abstract!

One of the most captivating films, period, ever made. Dogged perfectionism and a dizzying variety of techniques bring cartoon drawings and painted backdrops to life like nothing before or since. At times perhaps the visuals are tied too slavishly to the music. Beethoven's 6th is definitely the weakest, a tryingly saccharine serving of mythological kitsch that's a textbook example of what made "Disney" a pejorative term, but even that had largely won me over by the end.

The music is wonderful (well, duh) and the animation ranges from humourous to grand to dull (freakin centaurs and cherubs). Animation standouts are 'Night on Bald Mountain', 'The Rite of Spring' and of course 'Sorcerers Apprentice'. Still amazes me that this got made at the time, or I guess at any time really. Oh, and those dancing Ostriches and Hippos creeped me out.

The animation is beautiful and it has many great pieces of music. I don't think I've heard so many pieces of classical music at one time and I recognised most of them. There is no denying that Fantasia was a technically stunning achievement for its time. Its daring cross pollination strategy merged the disparate worlds of animation and classical music to create a unique non-narrative audio-visual experience that transcends novelty. In short, it's the 2001 of animation films, and I wouldn't be surprised if Kubrick was a fan.Like 2001, it loses much of its effect on the small screen, but unlike 2001 the imagery doesn't always match the grandiosity of the music.

Enjoying this, I'd argue depends on your taste in classical music (if any) and what your favourite style of art is too. I enjoy the more abstract stuff in here and it's lacking in quantity, plus I'm more interested in 20th century compositions too. That being said it is very visually engaging, and it's a very historically interesting film and a lot of the animation is very well done (and I mean that in general, not just in a for-its-time way). Probably a belter on drugs too I imagine.

Mistakes - 1) When Mickey and the broom come to the fountain for the first time, the angle of water flowing into the fountain changes between shots. 2) When the pterodactyls are shown looking over the edge of the cliff, between shots more of them appear out of nowhere. 3) When Mickey chops the broom to pieces, he places the axe next to it on the ground. Then in the next shot of the splinters, the axe is gone.
