So simple and yet so powerful. Remarkable piece of filmmaking.

Unlike the film's title would have you believe, our proud pair of protagonists are pretty much "near men" for the movie's entirety. This is, by no means, a bad thing, as the people they meet all have fascinating stories themselves...it's just...you know.

it's baffling how fluent mortensen seems even in languages he does not speak...and there's few of those.

This small, isolated tale feels very theme-heavy and literate (in the usual Camus fashion) and although this may not be a very successful film adaptation, there's still just enough to wallow in here, especially Mortensen's performance and (in the first half) the deliberately aggravatingly slow pace and dry natural cinematography that gets close to echoing the likes of Bela Tarr.

Delivering a stubbornly complex depiction of two men caught up in the Algerian War and touching on issues of ethnic misunderstanding and the far-reaching effects of war, Far From Men is a thematically rich piece. There is some fat that could be chewed off, but the film plays out as a delicately balanced slow burn. Algeria appears rough, unforgiving, and undeniably beautiful in this elegantly shot, thought provoking piece.

it's the kind of movie that makes its protagonist a multicultural teacher with a heart of gold and a dead wife, and employs a literal crossroads as a painfully on-the-nose metaphor at the climax, but the languid pacing punctuated with tense stand-offs and staccato violence, the understated script and palpable sense of place, above all the incredibly expressive performances from mortensen and kateb elevate what ought to be a stock wartime buddy western into something exceptionally heavy-hearted.

l'humanité au coeur de paysages grandioses, un épisode sombre de l'histoire récente, des images magnifiques, et le génie de Camus traduit en images.

Incredibly strong performance from Viggo Mortensen. I mean, what language doesn't he speak? Very beautiful, very tense, very strong, very nice and somehow silent soundtrack from Warren Ellis and Nick Cave. Loved it.

By now, Viggo Mortensen's feet must have calluses thicker than Peter Jackson.

A beautiful western set at the sidelines of the Algerian War, with the requisite wide open spaces and emerging tribal complexities. It moves like adventure literature, filling each encounter with humanistic gravitas. I really liked the spiritual peace this combination evokes, but it also becomes very tidy, very polished.
