Typical Hollywood charmer. William Powell runs the show and manages to keep this floating above average with an average shot script. With a short moment of assistance of a Busby Berkeley 'ostrich feather' number filled with super sexy girls wearing as little as possible between the feathers. Had William Powell not been there I'm fairly certain "Fashions of 1934" would have been a failure, so all credit to him for making it work and turning this one into a entertaining fashion crook story.

Only one Berkeley number, seriously guys? I mean it's a really good one, but still... the rest is pretty much just pointless and feels carelessly thrown-together. There are some funny lines but Powell's character is so utterly charmless it's hard to have even the slightest investment in the by-the-numbers screwball plot, and even the minor roles that are usually the secret weapon in this type of film are subpar. Still, overall probably a little bit better than 42nd Street or Footlight Parade.

I don't require the whole movie to be made of Busby Berkeley sequences.... at least 51% is a reasonable ask, IMO.

The movie is fairly standard and ordinary but William Powell is a blast.

No wonder Davis was eager to ditch Warner's. Daryl Zanuck, who cast her in Cabin in the Cotton--the only role until then that showcased even a little what she was about as an actress--had departed in 1933. Her previous movie, The Big Shakedown, and this one are especially egregious examples of miscasting. Here she's a glamor girl in a rom-com (um, no)--she HATED doing it. It's VERY light entertainment, and only William Powell comes off well.

Charming, funny, delightful musical number, good pace and most important of all, William Powell
