"It was 1985 and not even Sidney Poitier could resist the pull of the dance craze..." Flat drama never takes flight; hampered by some tired and old-fashioned choices, in plot and design (the syrupy strings that kick in during some dramatic moments are especially jarring). Peculiar digression into an attempted rape halfway through is a whiplash from left field; the dance sequences are proficient enough, but seem to go on forever. A bizarre entry in Poitier's terminally odd directorial career.
