As Fat Albert makes the jump to the big screen, its much beloved characters face challenges they couldn't have dreamed of as cartoon figures. By stepping out into the "real world," becoming fleash-and-blood, Fat Albert's "old-school" '50s-era sensibility makes him, and the Cosby Kids, fish out of water in today's world. (20th Century Fox)

Seeing Cosby collapse into a stupor after ostensibly being on his way to retire for the night is an uncomfortably on-the-nose gag – but otherwise, this is a sweetly benign, kiddie-friendly revisiting of these characters that takes a (very) light BEING THERE meets PLEASANTVILLE approach to its plotting and characterisations. Gets extra points for its sedate, laid back delivery, when it must have been tempting to go full loud pantomime, and Albert and his gang are a likable and endearing bunch.

It's funny how time works where I once would have said this is an insult to Bill Cosby's legacy. Now I think this absolute garbage dump is better than he deserves.

Good natured but ultimately stupid children's film benefits from solid casting and positive feel good vibes that almost compensate for the lousy script that has a decent premise but spins its wheels once the main plot elements are set in motion. Thompson is amiable as Fat Albert, and his friends are similarly likeable, but they are trapped in a film that gives them little to do other than flex their anachronistic foolishness. Cosby's cameo is funny though, and it looks good for a studio comedy

The lessons here are much simpler and more broadly themed than we've become accustomed to lately. Be kind. Play nice--even in high school. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Believe in yourself. Have good clean fun. By presenting them as gracefully as he does, Cosby not only gives kids solid values to emulate, he makes us all do some wishful thinking about the days when children's entertainment was children's entertainment. "A product of a modern Cosby mindset, Fat Albert conflates bourgeois acceptance with personal self-worth." - Ed Gonzalez

Fat Albert wasn't even a quality show. I watched it purely for its cheesiness. To think that this show would make for a good movie would require a mentally retarded director.

I wonder how much better this film would be when drunk or high, a question worthy of scientific enquiry.

Like seeing a young child singing badly in a school function, Fat Albert is an uncomfortable and often embarrassing film to watch, but you feel endeared by the attempt to entertain, even if it's a terrible performance. Cosby's creations deserve better than this, and so do the fans.

Watching a pudding pop melt in the microwave has been clinically proven to provide more laughs than this movie.

Fat Albert is not as bad as you might think. It was a sweet movie, and Kenan Thompson did a very good job bringing a cartoon charecter to life. Plus, this is the best movie Bill Cosby has been in in years. It had a really sweet ending too.
