Wysocki, the obese kid from 'Terri', is funny (he's comedically well-timed, okay!). Bill "The Rocketeer" Campbell aces the strict but, you've guessed it, benevolent father role, convincing us that a stereotype is a real character. O'Leary, on the other hand, is a bit uneven - which sort of fits the grungy character. His overzealous acting style is similar to that of Lillard who, between 'The Descendants' and this directorial debut, is living proof of his theme that reinventing oneself is doable.

I expected this to be very linear: chubby kid that has his life turned around by music. It isn't like that. This is an enjoyable drama about kids in highschool. It's enjoyable because the characters are not over the top, and the issues are not all about the fat kid. Good way to spend 90 minutes of your life.

I read this book back in fourth grade and it was a big deal to me. I thought this was a good adaptation. Wysocki and Bill Campbell are great and, even if the ending is pretty far-fetched, I like how Troy's problems don't get the tidy resolution you would expect them to.

It's an uneven, slightly messy movie, but I can't help but relate and sympathize with Troy's story. Lillard managed to ace the one thing even some of the best directors living stumble on: Enjoyable characters and story. And for a directoral debut, this isn't a bad flick.

some actual music being played by the fat kid would have been awesome, I think that is what this movie is missing on the whole. not enough music for a movie about music. just lots of awkward fat kid stuff. It was good but I was let down by no actual tectonics numbers
