The story of Faust had been mined rather thoroughly for trick films for a decade by this point. There's a bit of that here, but Pathé's more interested in giving things the prestige treatment, with pretty, artistic sets and lighting, etc. It's still very much from the era when longer films tend to rely heavily on the audience's familiarity with the source material (in this case, Gounod's opera), to fill in the gaps.
