Well you gotta start somewhere I guess. If you ignore Stanley Kubrick's later work and judge it as someone trying to be big and ambitious with limited resources, it's not too bad as a first feature film. Some wonky acting and editing for sure, but the story works and it's fairly well shot by a newcomer who's brilliance had yet to shine through. At just an hour runtime, it's surprisingly watchable all things considered amateur about it.

Em honra de Virginia Leith (1925 - 2019) filme #1. Não é tão ruim quanto dizem, só é distante anos-luz das usuais obras-primas do diretor. A edição tem alguns momentos verdadeiramente terríveis e é um filme mudo com áudio dublado por cima (coisa que os amantes do cinema italiano estão acostumados), mas o Kubrick aprendeu que cinema é se cercar de gente talentosa para ajuda-lo e não mais fez tudo sozinho como o orçamento limitado o forçou aqui. It's understandable why Kubrick disowned this. This clearly is a pretty poor movie. But the directing and cinematography are the least of the movies problems. Kubrick, like many debutants, is very ambitious and not all of his experiments work. The production design is very cheap, but one could get over that. What drags this down completely is the horrible writing by someone who has no clue about how people talk or act. Which is n't helped by some terrible acting also.

A great student film (though Kubrick wasn't a student); a severe misfire with flashes of brilliance... There is a lot here that's terrible, but the power of Kubrick's photographic eye is very much on display.

Compared to the contemporary species this creature is one rare specimen. It carries way more slivers of substance than it can deliver and it shows in all the unpolished details and unfinished businesses. More concentration and less focus would have made miracles or, to rephrase, it needed bigger budget. But given all the financial circumstances, 15 people crew and all - it marks not a failure but a promising start of what became a great journey in the following years.

It's a bit silly and broad, and the short length does no favours to character development (everyone's gone crazy within 10 minutes). But even through the B-movie detritus Kubrick fashions a creepy, off-putting tone and atmosphere, and pulls off some lovely, if not amazing, little tricks in the editing and shot composition. It's no masterpiece, but I had fun watching it, and would call it underrated. Don't necessarily trust an artist's opinion of his own work.

A lot of aimless and embarrassing chin-stroking made worse by awful acting and slippery editing. There's rarely a shot here that lasts longer than five seconds, it gets hard to watch.
