Suspension of disbelief is required for several aspects of the plot, but this is a decent little mystery that hooks you with an interesting premise and unfolds in a satisfying manner. The direction is kinda cool, with all the dream sequences and trick photography and whatnot - it reminded me a bit of Dick Powell's hallucinations in "Murder, My Sweet". It's undeniably rough around the edges and the script wavers somewhere between "genius" and "laughable", but it's a fun way to pass 70 minutes.

This cheapo noir gets a bit ludicrous at times, but has a lot of poverty row charm. The effects are cheesy but entertaining, and the film has a gritty edge to it. Most notably, it handles suicide in a very upfront way. This was one of Kelley's earliest roles, and he's not bad although you couldn't say he's that great either. The girl who plays his girlfriend, Kay Scott, makes her first and only credited screen appearance. A shame she didn't do more, because she's mighty cute. Silly but fun.

Low budget noirs live in their own little world, and this one doubly so, what with all the surreal imagery and somewhat stilted acting. It all adds to the charm, though, and the craziness unravels in a surprisingly structured way. The visuals are quite incredible and it makes me wonder if a higher budget would have made the better or robbed them of their charm. Another one to throw into the "I wonder what a clean print would look like" pile.

Just a mess of continuity errors, plot holes, factual inaccuracies, and sudden edits in between long stretches of exposition (with poorly-mixed sound) and boredom.

Wonderfully stylish direction (every bit as gutwrenching as Detour) mostly overcomes the absurdities of the plot and situations.

I get what Fear in the Night (1947) goes for, but it turns so convoluted for what is at heart a simple murder story, that it doesn't become the thrilling experience it aims for.

Above average for a B movie crime thriller. Also, Deforest Kelley (Bones from Star Trek) was the star.
