For the first half I was taken aback by the theatrical acting of both female leads, which seemed to fit more in a giallo than a Wilder movie. After the twist the movie gets way more interesting and the exaggerated dramatic behavior and acting of the first half made sense in hindsight. I suspect this is a movie that will benefit when rewatching while knowing the twist. Placing this in context of Wilders oeuvre; the similarities with Sunset Blvd. can't be denied.

A companion piece to Sunset Blvd, Wilder envisioned Fedora as some kind of statement on the faded glamour of Hollywood. Whether its deployment of a classical style to make its points is ironic or not, this is a desperately dated and painfully slow film that was understandly dismissed on release. Wilder seems well aware of his impending irrelevancy, which is woven into the film's fabric, a sense of time having passed and expired, but it's easy to see why Hollywood stopped returning his calls.

There are a few funny gags and lines here and there which make one wish Wilder and Diamond would have gone all in on making this a comedy. But instead it's an inelegant, predictable, and preposterous mystery with a lot of bad acting.
