John Waters doesn't make films, he makes black velvet reproductions of Bosch paintings.

Thank god John Waters and his group of deviants found each other. Say what you will about the content and the cheap production values, this is a hilarious and irreverent celebration of crime, beauty, and not giving a fuck. I get if this film doesn't win over the more snooty types, but either way, watching a director with complete freedom doing whatever outrageous thing he wants is satisfying, especially when he has a cast like this. Should be required viewing in American schools.

Incredibly imaginative! This movie is a wonderful journey through the rise and fall of a simple, innocent and ambitious girl, played by the absoloutly magnificent Divine. An epic trash masterpiece.

Female Trouble may be John Waters at his peak. It retains the off-the-wall lunacy, the shocking sleaze and luridness of his earlier films but already shows the superior cohesiveness and narrative flow of his later, tamer and more mainstream films. Although hideously grotesque and hilariously goofy, Waters' unique aesthetic seems honed to perfection here, and the plot is actually well-developed and engaging.

Hardcore art. Maybe most accomplished Divine-Waters' work in their 70s run. Glossy punk melodrama saga that starts with Dawn leaving home after beating up her parents, having baby from working-class nasty hitchhiker, getting married and finally led to business/crime life through couple of evil salon owners who want her performative life for profit. No room for anything but satire of both Hollywood classic genre cinema and 60s counterculture. Even death penalty is worthy a pose and tons of laughs

Aah, Dawn Davenport, DAWN DAVENPORT! She's pregnant and she wants money! This tale of a teenage runaway (Of course played bya 20 something yo man) and the recriminations is hysterical from start to finish. watch out for the scene where she picks up a guy (also played by divine) and has sex with him. truly disgusting, I LOVE it!

Really just a sickening, intense, hilarious portrait of a cross-dressing menace who challenges the notion of beauty. Not as graphic as some of John Waters' other works, but far more emotionally visceral. You'll be scarred.

This is my favorite of John Waters earlier movies, if only because the first time I saw it the trampoline scene made laugh so hard I peed my pants.

Utterly gleeful in its nastiness, it sets the scene early on and manages to keep up the astounding villainy of such a tale, and is hysterically hilarious all throughout. All the actors have a blast with their roles, Divine in particular wholly encompassing this most wonderfully rotten anti-hero. But the film recognises that its own shock value has a limitation, and it transitions into a demented and universal tale of the unbelievable narcissism of fame/infamy.

Starts off as trashy fun, but after about 10 minutes it slowly becomes just tedious trash. As it went on I found myself laughing less and less and just wanting it to be over.

"The auto in-dos-tree." This is the psychotic filth bio-pic of a Waters-Divine spawned character, Dawn Davenport. Female Trouble is a clear demonstration of the flipped moral compass space the two happily operate in, right up to its final shot.

The film opens with talking about how important Baltimore used to to be and theres a real pride in the marginalized people of these forgotten towns and cities left behind by the American dream. A real respect and love you don’t really ever get to see anywhere else like a Browning flick in that perverse way. Great colour palette like usual. While it’s a bit too annoying to fully be my thing I love the punk toying with sensibility inverting 50’s melodrama

A movie with unique style and cult classic appeal, but loses some of its appeal 20 minutes in. There's only so much crude humor you can laugh at. Still, it's worth watching with an audience that will appreciate it for what it is.

Probably John Waters' best film (though I often flip-flop between this and Desperate Living), this one is a depraved romp that seems to be referencing grindhouse cheapies like "Teenage Mother." Definitely Waters' funniest film, and the one where he began to come into his own as an actual filmmaker and not just a documenter of depravity.

The "crime is beauty" ethos explored in Female Trouble prefigures the existence of Harmony Korine's entire career, right down to Gummo featuring a disgusting spaghetti scene. Truly transgressive to an extent that feels perverse even almost 50 years later. Its continual willingness to exponentially shatter new boundaries had me laughing in sheer awe on occasion. It probably drags a bit at the end, but oh well: third acts sometimes go on too long; no matter if they go out with a bang.

This is my absolute favorite John Waters film from the '70s. Yes, the "quality" of acting and equipment is... poor. But it's supposed to be! This is high camp at its finest. One of the better Waters stories, and Divine really shines - as usual, but she is especially fabulous in this one. You have to be in the right mood for this one, but if you are, it is worth it... boy, is it worth it.

Em honra do centenário da minha musa-mor Dame Edith Massey!!! Filme #2. "Queers are just better. I’d be so proud if you was a fag. The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life. " Não tem como explicar o fato de John Waters ser um dos maiores gênios do cinema dos anos 70 e nem Divine ser um das mais talentosas atrizes de sempre, só os vendo trabalhando juntos é possível constatar o poder de ambos. Essa é a obra prima de Waters e Divine. DVDRip Handjob

Sketchy, disgusting, and screamingly funny, but also genuine and with the sting of real anguish. There's plenty of John Waters' work I haven't seen but this is head and shoulders above his others that I have.

This was one of my favorite films as a kid. While the first 20 minutes of Female Trouble are still great (probably the best 20 minutes of John Waters' career), it's just not enough as it quickly falls apart and loses steam after the 20 minute mark. I was willing to give the remainder a pass before, but not anymore. It's poorly crafted. It crudely and amateurishly meanders for what seems like hours and becomes painfully unwatchable and unlikable. I don't hate it, but it needs to be refined.

John Waters' films are a reminder of the infinite possibilities of cinema, and a reminder that that's not always a good thing. Why this guy has a following I won't ever understand. I hated Pink Flamingos but decided to try this to see if it was any better. It wasn't. Almost every choice is baffling and it's trying too hard to be campy to be campy.

A strong start and an interesting premise, but the movie loses steam about half-way through. Divine gives a great performance (as do others in John Water's style), but can't carry the movie completely. The narrative is all over the place, but it gives plenty of black comedic laughs along the way.
