Uneven and overlong battle of wills between Welles and Jurgens is further diluted by problematic structural issues in the screenplay, with Syms' love interest to Jurgens unconvincing, and an overly episodic second half, which turns unexpectedly and vividly brutal towards the deneument. Worth seeing for Jurgens' wonderful performance as the drunken sea bum, and for Welles who hardly stretches himself, but is still in good form as the pompous captain.

Nothing much on offer really. The main idea is quite interesting but that's not the case with the film's execution, or the story's evolution for that matter. Mark Conrad is an interesting character and Jurgens is a fitting choice to portray him, yet the whole experience remains pretty unrewarding on all levels: action, romance, humour or drama.
