Black and white footage of performances, interviews, and conversations at the Newport Folk Festival, from 1963 to 1966. The headliners are Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan. Son House and Mike Bloomfield talk about the blues; John Hurt, Howlin' Wolf, and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee show its range. Several talk musical philosophy, and there's a running commentary about the nature and appeal of folk music. The crowd looks clean cut. (imdb)

After watching Lerner's "Other Side of the Mirror", I was yearning for more uninterrupted musical performances. But of course, that would be impossible without excluding a great deal of content. And this film really shines at capturing the eclecticism and spirit of the scene.

Wonderful. A little rushed at times; the music doesn't get the space it deserves. But it's great to see the range of audience and some more obscure performances. 'though everything tends to pale in comparison to Son House. Buffy Sainte-Marie was an esoteric highlight, for sure.

Just wonderful but please, stop interrupting the musical performances. I would happily watch four more hours of this.

Succeeds both in documentation and as a music film. Hearing more of Appalachian dulcimer would have been appreciated.
