A romantic comedy about a man, a woman and a football team. Based on Nick Hornby's best selling autobiographical novel, Fever Pitch. English teacher Paul Ashworth (Colin Firth) believes his long standing obsession with Arsenal serves him well. But then he meets Sarah. Their relationship develops in tandem with Arsenal's roller coaster fortunes in the football league, both leading to a nail biting climax. (imdb)

It's not bad and has some decent moments - teaching school kids to appeal for offside in unison - but frankly the main character is still an idiot and Arsenal winning the title (however dramatically) leaves me cold. Sorry Gooners.

More drama than comedy. Colin Firth and Ruth Gemmell were great in this. The remake is much funnier but this is better in every other way.

A really stupid movie. I hate the whole "Red Sox Yankees" feud, because 90% of the people involved just pick a team to fit in socially and don't care. The other 10% are freakishly serious about a bunch of guys who make 20 million dollars to hit a ball with a stick.

As a fan of both football and women I feel this movie speaks to me.

I don't feel like it captured the true essence of why people love football (or any sports team really) as well as the book did. Instead it focuses on the relationship which didn't flow well, and often felt completely random. I guess there's something to be said for realism in how random real relationships are as well. It's just we get to experience all the moments of those and not just intermittent parts.

A satisfying take on Nick Hornby's amazing book, mostly thanks to the good performances and the overall tragic feeling about a character totally addicted to Arsenal. It might not be great as a film, but it really works if you are a football fan. I'm a fan. It was just impossible for me not to conect with Paul.

Top badass moment? Seeing an Arsenal fan hold down a proper job and string whole sentences together; it’s like watching a functioning alcoholic. The whole premise of this film is quite suspect - I really couldn’t understand why waiting 18 years to win the league again was made out to be such a big deal; try being a West Ham supporter. The rest is pretty much what you’d expect, but it's made well and the ending is genuinely exciting. 1 (clearly stupid) cat, no chainsaws or decapitations.

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #101: Couldn't think of a more fitting film to watch on the anniversary of our '89 league win. It's a great take on what it means to be an obsessive football fan. The romance, however, lacks chemistry, moves at sonic speed, and never settles for me to be fully invested in it. Colin Firth does play an excellent Arsenal fan though, extremely dour and despondent, it was like looking into a mirror.
