Film About a Woman Who...
Rainer's landmark film is a meditation on ambivalence that plays with cliché and the conventions of soap opera while telling the story of a woman whose sexual dissatisfaction masks an enormous anger.

so, so much in here, but i suppose we should start off with what it is about mostly clearly: a woman who is in a constant state of self-reflection and self-criticism regarding a man and the thoughts, angers and sexual fantasies she has toward him. beyond that is an endless stream of both feminist and cinematic contemplation.

Inventive and interesting exploration of the productive and destructive tensions between men and women, Rainer being here on the way from dance to cinema. This kind of self-exposure of ambivalent self-love and self-hate seems utterly absent from the kinds of arty videos one occasionally sees at "installations" (which almost seem to follow a formula now), let alone the complexity of perspectives. Aside from anything else, worth it for the terrific sequence, "An Emotional Accretion in 48 Steps".
