Annette Bening breaths life into this story of a film star who is young at heart but betrayed by age and illness. The May-September relationship seemed desperate at times. The characters are well written and acting performances were good. Despite her age, Annette is still adorable. Her character, however, was a volatile and vain roller coaster of emotions. Engaging and interesting. Worth watching.

A story like it's been told many times before that has little novelty to add, but her character has a few strong scenes.

Nice, but bland.

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool is based on the life of the real Gloria Grahame, an Oscar-winning actress largely forgotten now. (Most of us have probably seen her briefly in It's a Wonderful Life, where she played Violet Bick). Her career in the tabloids outlasted her fame on the screen, and she was allegedly obsessed with her beauty. As she got older, she apparently began stuffing cotton between her lips and teeth to make her face look fuller.

It's... charming, for the most part. But charm can only do so much when the story doesn't have much else going for it; it gets boring and even grating.

An interesting watch if you are curious about Gloria Grahame, well acted but a little bland.

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool showcases brilliant work from Annette Bening, whose performance is more than enough to outweigh this biopic's basic narrative.

Much missed potential on what could have been a very impactful script but instead filled with forgettable dialogue. Acting is very good, and liked McGuigan's touch. Still left feeling it will fade instead of being memorable.

Elegant and crucially slow. Almost like it's stopping itself on purpose. Jamie Bell is very good (and much better than Bening).
