Aw that's cute, it thinks it's Bad Lieutenant.

Revels in balls-out insanity, an absurd, fucked-up trip into the tragi-comic life of James McAvoy's bastard Scottish cop. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and I think that was a positive thing. A crazy, dark movie.

I usually hate these bad cop dramas because, aside from the BAD LIEUTENANT movies, they tend not to offer us anything beyond "whoa, this guy's a bad cop! Look at him being a bad cop!" FILTH doesn't give us much to hold onto, either, aside from a mondo bizarro twist at the end. McAvoy's performance is undeniably strong, as is Baird's visual sense. It's just that...okay, yeah, this guy's a bad cop. So what? What else is there? Why should I give a shit?

Big surprise and really stunning stuff. Comedic sociopathy at it's best. Now I have to read the book.

McAvoy captures the horrible Bruce's doombound journey beautifully; his eyes, face and body capturing every ounce of scheming, wickedness, depravity, and dark humour, and also glimpses of the loss, regret and failure which has sent him on his way. The tone of the film reflects Bruce's adventure, veering between tragedy, black comedy, exploitation and flashes of surreal horror. The supporting cast are effective, and Baird shows enough restraint to avoid the path of Britflick cliché. Recommended.

This movie is so unbelievably full of itself. It thinks it was made twenty years ago, when this kind of hyper-stylized macho "badass"-ness hadn't been done dozens of times already, and done much better. Take equal parts Trainspotting, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and A Clockwork Orange, reduce the quality by 95% and you get this. The hardcore veneer (which is actually quite tame) tries and fails to hide the script's tired conventions. This might have impressed me when I was in 8th grade.

This is the kind of movie that wants to be highly kinetic but fails to do much beyond running in circles.

Bizarre! McAvoy gives a strong performance, and the animal visions were quite fun.

This is one of those twisted movies that makes you feel lots of different things. I laughed, I felt sad as it was revealed why he was going so nuts, and I felt my fair share of disgust about what the character was doing. That it could pull it around and make me feel for him is an accomplishment. I felt intrigued the entire time. McAvoy put in one of the best performances of the year, every snarl, tear, perverted/creepy douchebag look, everything he did was pitch perfect.

Fantastically lead by McAvoy who deteriorates by the second throughout the whole film, with a great support turn from the always excellent Marsan. Dark, surreal, and grubby, Bruce's demise is undoubtedly entertaining, although admittedly I'm not sure "Filth" makes the most of its black comedy opportunities. Entertainingly nasty it certainly is though, and I liked the ending.

A film sometimes as bipolar as its pro(an)tagonist, with moments of
utter hate and craziness suddenly
turning into soul searching and regret.
McAvoy is excellent as human filth,
and the narrative doesnt let go until
the very last frame.

I absolutely never would have expected this performance out of James McAvoy. Admittedly, I don't know much (if any) of his work beyond "Atonement" and the trailers for "Trance" and "X-Men First Class", but this was still a revelation. In fact, there was so much that was surprising, thrilling and shocking that I feel like I need to see it again if it hits the states. Best movie I've seen this year.

I'm glad Filth takes a less literal approach and tackles the big themes of the book in an oblique way. James McAvoy is definitely the highlight here, as the film is entirely from his perspective he really sells the mental breakdown of his character. It's darkly funny but just silly enough as to not get bogged down in misery - it walks a fine line between comedy and tragedy, which is the best it could do considering the source. I also really liked the use of focus giving a slightly "off" look.

Now that's an underestimated, serious and perfect thing. Once again, McAvoy is far beyond of himself. And those soundtracks, that ambiance, I can't find anything bad. Same rules apply.
