I was always more interested in Sean Connery's novel then the actual relationship. But regardless there is some strong performances, even though it's cheesy as hell. Really odd that Gus Van Sant directed it.

While I appreciate the dynamics between the two, especially when Connery told the boy about how losers always complain about their best; but given the boy's young age, I found his interpretation of what winners go home and do to be wholly inappropriate.

Moving, compelling, well acted and directed, but could have gained in texture and force by going deeper into the texts, into the soul of the writers...

A good film with solid performances but highly predictable. Nice cameo at the end which brings to memory a similar film. And F. Murray Abraham plays a character not unlike his most famed character (Salieri).

Unfocused overly familiar higher education tale plays like DEAD POETS HUNTING, though the story thread involving Connery and Brown does give the elder actor a respectable performance to go out on (and is heartily recommended for Connery fans). It's a shame that unnecessary (and overplayed) conflict is introduced by Abraham's cartoonishly vindictive college professor - Connery and Brown's evolving relationship has plenty enough grist for drama! Nice, subtly oddball support work by Paquin.

It's ironic that accusations of plagarism are a central theme in this blatant ripoff of Good Will Hunting. A surprise cameo by Matt Damon implies permission for screenwriter Mike Rich to do so. Decent, formulistic melodrama. Nothing more...

Really does feel like an inferior Good Will Hunting, the main fault being the relationship/banter between the kid and Connery isn't as believable as Damon & Williams. Abraham's performance as a dick is enjoyable though.

This may seem like van Sant just dry-testing the script for Good Will Hunting, but I found this movie to have way more heart and a bit more of a kick-ass ending. Oh and Sean Connery, things are usually better with Sean Connery.

There's a great film in there, but Van Sant forces everything a little too much which makes several key parts feel manipulative. If you let yourself get past that the performances are strong and the story is quite interesting and well paced.

A writing version of Good Will Hunting and nothing more, right down to the director. It's harmless, even watchable, and contains Sean Connery's last non-shameful performance, but the déjà vu you'll get if you've seen Hunting is crippling and insurmountable.

I'm having difficulty "finding" what to say about this picture. It's involving yet magically false, how does it get me to buy into this most implausible story? Well, because I'm a schmuck & i go for this sappy trash. Avoids some of the Van Sant's more annoying obsessions for the most part & is high caliber commercial hollywood.

After cashing in the good will he built up with GOOD WILL HUNTING with his PSYCHO remake, Gus Van Sant went back to do more of a pseudo-remake of his mainstream breakthrough classic. In some key ways, this is a stronger film. More direct, more sincere, he doesn't feel the need to distract himself with curlicues like Harmony Korine cameos. Simultaneously, he has a good feeling of how and why we fetishize academia and doesn't get in the way of his material. The film is surprisingly irresistible.
