While no doubt Vivian Maier makes for a suitable film subject - her life as a 'hidden' artist is worth engaging with - this is not realised here. Maloof and Siskel (the directors) fall victim to the all-to-common mistake of positioning the documentary subject as 'odd', 'special' etc. which ends up defining the film. It's lazy film making and gives documentary films a bad name.

The character? Beyond amazing and interesting.
The documentary? Interesting but risky, it was a little bit everywhere. The dark things were added too late to no proper end, it was a bit confusing and lacked focus at certain points.
But thanks to the character, it was intruiging till the end.

This is one of the few documentaries I've seen where I felt completely satisfied at the end. I wasn't yearning for additional info, I felt like I got the most complete story of Vivian possible from this movie. The right balance of leaving things up to interpretation and investigation.
