Do people really stand in front of the mirror and speak like that out loud? I think the stare said all there was to say on its own. It was building tension well for a while but got a bit OTT.

Denis's poignant, sensual, sometimes even disturbing suspenseful love story about a woman, the man she loves now, the man she used to love and the complications among bodies in motion and on fire. Beautiful and underrated film.

Certainly less agonising and more thoughtfully made than previous Denis films (even the ones about the same subject matter). It's a pretty damn stripped back tale, with a respectable, though not heaps riveting, conclusion. But it's gripping in the little it shows, helped by powerhouse performances from the romantic duo, and helped further by a focused script.
