This is a perfect background movie for having your six year old son suddenly get interested in while you're not paying attention and then you look and he's mesmerized by thong after thong and you think, that's not so bad but I wouldn't ever tell anyone that I let it happen, least of all my wife. He did think Darkwolf was pretty awesome and he isn't wrong.

Two words: hypo. thermia. Though, it's hard not to love Bakshi's not-so-subtle imagery throughout the flick. Animator: "In the next scene we have a band of dark-skinned savages watching the fair-skinned beauty bathe in a lake." Director: "Draw some penis-shaped mushrooms in the background. Big ones."

Hanna Barbara in heat. I actually have an affinity for the painted animation style, but it was hard to take any of the plot seriously when grown men talk about politics, kill each other, and kidnap beautiful maidens while wearing thongs.

An animated film made for horny 14 year old boys if there ever was one. Still, a bit of brainless Barbarian-based fun is acceptable now and then. The unending onslaught of man-thongs, less so.

The problem with Ralph Bakshi isn't that he's a bad animator (although he's certainly not great); it's that he seems to have no concept of narrative cohesion in a filmic setting. Two characters will be in the same room and you won't even know it because it's so spatially confused. The entire continent makes no sense; it seems like every location is within a half mile of each other because the continuity is so bad. And then the story is about as thin as the stupid costumes everyone is wearing.

Being the only animated film based on Frazetta's art, this should hold some appeal to his fans, but even they're likely find the story flat & predictable. While Frazetta's penchant for violence & nudity (the damsel wears a thong bikini & blades dig in) gives the visuals a distinctively unapologetic, non- PC feel, even 2 of Marvel Comic's biggest 1970's writers failed to add any surprising story elements. Sword& sorcery is a genre bursting w/ cliches, but surely they've never had an easier payday

The animation and backgrounds are awesome, as are the slow-motion action sequences. A little too predictably high fantasy for its own good, but fun to look at.

Some nice rotoscoping if you like that sort of thing, but the story is trite and the pace meandering.

Dull fantasy story that is pretty much just one simple retread premise used as an excuse to show fights and muscles for 80 minutes. The art style isn't bad, but the whole thing is empty and uninteresting.

Fairly boring fantasy fare, and a shit ton of animated ass and buffalo shots.

I really liked the crazy rotoscopped, it looked very real. Unfortunately the story is so painfully boring and cliche that you end up with a bit of a zero-sum. Wasn't a terrible way to waste time though.

Some of the rotoscoping work is still really impressive, and holds up even today. Beyond that, the less said about it the better.

Enjoyable Bakshi animated style but I just couldn't really get into it at all. The plot is downright childish in it's conception and never goes deeper than "this bad guy is bad, save the princess and stop the bad guy."

This plays a lot like an overlong segment from the movie Heavy Metal. The characters and their motivations are all basic enough that you understand them within 30 seconds, but the rest of the movie just consists of those characters fighting things or running and hiding from things. Everybody spends the movie mostly-naked, and there's a deus ex machina plot device near the end that really made me wonder why it wasn't used in the first five minutes.

This really should be called Boobs and Running. It is clear what Bakshi wanted to highlight with his animation, which is a shame because much of the backdrops are quite beautiful.

I really do respect Frank Frazetta's formidable background painting skills, but Bakshi's animation feels lazy, the score has nothing that stands out, and Teegra could make any feminist puke. Most of all, this film seriously has a LOT of racism. A LOT.

The wolf guy and some of the rotoscopy were the only interesting thing in the lot. Otherwise, the moment they introduced the dumb princess, the quality of everything dropped brutally. The plot got dumber, the character was dumb, and it was obvious they spent all their time getting ass shots of her. They didn't even bother drawing her a face, they made some sort of lumpy blob with two cross-eyed things for it. There were guy asses too, but they were flat so what was the point.

Interesting animation where all figures are overdrawn on live acting. The background and figures are little too much separated from each other, but don't forget when it was done. Animation owns a lot to Frank Frazetta's paintings. Story is pretty simple, but who cares. Some not well developed subplots. But recommended to see. Definately.

It's a decent Conanesque story but the animation is clunky, the voice acting is uninspired and the direction and pacing are dull.

The style is generally cool but I just didn't vibe with it. I love me some schlock, but this barely has any personality where, outside of Nekron; who gets too little screentime, the entire cast has the most white bread, boring characterization imaginable. And while the rotoscoping is generally decent, the choreography is boring as hell and the background art is incredibly bland. Gotta love how the villains are literally called "subhumans" though, the unsubtle imagery in this movie is amazing.

i cant help my curiosity when it comes to bakshi, maybe because of the lack of competition in his field, actually thats probably exactly what it is. His style is cool and there arnt many adult animated films out there (besides anime) so he basically competes with himself. This one falls into the typical bakshi folder. Its very weird as usual but as i always say, it looks really cool so thats what keeps me coming back

Yes, Rothoscope is not for everyone, I think sometimes it's magical. the whole movie is it's Frazetta poster: Swords and sandals, Barbarian hero rescues the girl. the most simple and linear fantasy movie I've ever watched. but it has it's merits.

My heart says to give this a higher rating just cuz the thicc & curvy princess is a mega babe who wears a tiny thong bikini the whole movie, but my head has to be a bit more measured and realistic about how bare bones the plot and characters are even for an early 80s sword and sorcery flick. Still kinda cool tho tbh.

Non-existent swords-and-sorcery plot, cookie-cutter characters, and inconsistent animation quality. The animations are drawn over actual actors using rotoscoping. Often, the characters are not integrated into the background very well. During combat scenes, however, the animation comes into its own and is satisfyingly visceral, including some interesting slow-motion shots. Lots of ass (male and female thong action) and tits. Also really sexist, and really racist.

Racism, sexism, homophobia. I'm not sure that it was intentional, though. When you are exclusively following established tropes and cliches, unintentional "bad stuff" just gets lost in the mix.
