The accumulated effect of the film is to reduce this abstract issue back down to the level of human beings. It's a masterful piece of work, often very slow and indirect, but it's power is undeniable.

I am sympathetic to this film's cause (a juxtaposition of the refugee experience with that of ordinary people in the same place) as well as its formal conceits. Rosi knows how to frame shots, and the images are never less than compelling. But the film could have been ten minutes or ten hours long, and I'm not sure it would be a much different experience. Rosi's fundamental contrast/comparison is set up early and repeated numerous times. I'm not sure it advances much beyond that, though.

A striking portrait of humanity that juxtaposes the mundane and the extreme. It moves slowly though, and its points might be better made with some more judicious editing.

The "stories" about the locals don't really bring anything to the movie and the commentary on refugees is left quite thin when concentrating on Lampedusa with no voiceover narration.
