I'm incredibly mixed up on this one - more so than anything I've come across with Godard, even more so than My Life to Live.

Godard had some cinematic ideas he wanted to try and some political stuff he wanted to say, and didn't let the fact that they didn't fit together very well stop him. Everything he did here he'd done this before, and better, in the 60's. Still, he does an admirable job of piecing things together into a reasonably understandable and well shot film that comes out pretty fun.

Godard at his most playful (at least since his FNW days) and self referential (maybe) and critical. Shot beautifully. You could watch this with no subs and just take it all in. When he hugged the tv. I felt that.

it feels to me to be a sort of self-reflective remake of contempt, though i don't know how well that would hold up on proper analysis. rather odd and comedic, though also a complete mess, and not necessarily in a 'nouvelle vague' good way either, as this could also do with the tightness of contempt. but i did rather like it. also, my tenth godard.

Feels like Godard just repeating himself. The music, and the emotional and metafilm themes comes right out of Contempt, with the militant edge that we've all seen before in Tout va bien, Weekend, or La chinoise. That wouldn't be a bad thing on it's own, but it all comes together in a jumbled mess, with only slight appeal.

There's a scene in this film that involves a hand, TV static and Tom Waits. It's one of the very best, most evocative scenes in Godard's oeuvre. Also, as far as I know, this is the only Godard movie where he appears as a creepy parody of himself. In case it isn't clear by now, this one's pretty great.

It's maybe a classic Godard film, but it did not give much of kicks for me. Music was nice though. Very special way of acting they choose.

Some movies of Godard resemble the egoistical masturbation of non-sense poststructural French philosophy so much that their self-deconstruction and reflexivity end up again in a self-parodizing manner. Here again unlike his "Passion" Godard gets stuck with his mambo jumbo like "Why does men exist?" or shit like "To be or not to be..." in an endless misogyny despite his craft and ability to meditate on film and create image-ideas about his time.

Gotta love Godard playing a slightly crazy movie director, in his adaptation of Bizet's opera. As one could expect from Godard, it isn't straight adaptation, far from it. Plot is absurd, and consists mostly of long shots of sea, quartet playing some musical piece and Demeters' boobs. I stopped pretending I dig Godard long time ago. He made some very good films, but this one isn't one of them.

I had no idea Godard could make a film as good as this.

Godard as we know him - only a bit more playful and with a lot more explicit nudity than his films from the 1960s. Compared to most of his other works this is quite easy to watch and could work as a good introduction to his oeuvre.
