The attempt at some Bond-ish plot goes off the rails soon enough, luckily the creativity of the fight scenes makes this worth a watch; fun setups like an action scene entirely underwater, nice. I chuckled at how assholeish Jackie's bosses are regarding his safety, but maybe it's a meta reference to unsafe working conditions for HK stuntmen? Seeing the stuntreel during the credits always makes me feel bad for not rating these movies higher. Sorry you guys got hurt and I didn't appreciate it more!

First Strike feels like Jackie Chan's stab at a Bond film and overall it doesn't quite work. However I enjoyed this film as a kid and as can be expected the stunts and fight scenes are great fun. In particular the fight scene involving ladders where the fight choreography is incredible. I always enjoy watching Jackie Chan films for the stunt work alone. But this sequel of sorts lacks the overall enjoyment and quality of the first two Police Story films.

It's a Jackie Chan movie. That really says it all, but in case you don't know, that means it's a lighthearted action-adventure-thriller that doesn't impress too much in the story or acting, but when Jackie starts fighting and doing stunts the screen comes alive with spectacular energy. Jackie wields a full-sized ladder as a melee weapon in this movie. I think that speaks for itself.

Paced like a cartoon and plotted just as vapidly, the fourth installment in the "Police Story" series emulates the Bond formula with little success, making this film notable only for its renowned ladder scene. (New Line Cinema ver.)

Viewed November 24, 2020. The ladder fight is the greatest thing I've ever seen.

Tried pretty hard to be Bondish with different locales etc, but the fight scenes are mostly subpar. Still Chan is charming with his humor and there are one or two fights/stunts.

Jackie has impressed the CIA and the organization wants him to follow the suspected Tsui to Australia. He receives additional instructions from his own boss to also take a few days of vacation and relax. On arrival, however, it turns out that a simple report on her behavior on the plane is not enough, and he becomes embroiled in a situation where he does not know who to trust.

this is when the franchise really started to get hollywood-ized, but i don't really mind. it has one of jackie's very best prop fights, second only to the warehouse fight in rumble in the bronx. and a koala.

Also known in the U.S. as "Jackie Chan's First Strike". I love it. It has Jackie scaling the outside of a hotel to escape 7-foot tall Nathan Jones, Jackie with a koala pal, and skiing. And sharks. And fighting with a ladder. It's frigging awesome. This is sort of required viewing if you like Jackie Chan.

Jackie fights on stilts. This movie is ridiculous, fun, and action packed.

Rewatched. The score is for the original HK version. Easily one of the most delightful action comedies of the 90s. Too bad New Line ruined it for American audiences. The crap Hans Zimmerish music totally destroyed the rhythm and tone of the fight scenes. They even cut some of the underwater finale. Blasphemy! Definitely seek out the original.

Cheesy story and acting, but what are you expecting here? Some good action and fun choreography in the second half. Even though Jackie is slowing down by this age, he still has more pep and moves than most action stars.

Each action set piece is a short film -- cause, effect, cause effect. Also, Jackie's the man.

I loved it. It was like a Bond movie that was actually fun. The fight scenes involving the ladder and the water were wonderful. It's the pinnacle of Jackie channeling his inner Buster Keaton. Rarely do I have as much fun watching a movie.

The story is way too convoluted for the 77 minutes run time to have any decent character motivations. Therefore it also only has four big action scenes. But one of them is the infamous ladder scene, so I don't mind.

It's a pretty entertaining movie as far as the action goes but the main problem is that the story (at least in the English dub) is completely incoherent. It's not a very fun movie to watch now, as a result.

Has a Jackie-Goes-Hollywood feel to it, dressing itself up in the most popular American action tropes of the time (KGB double agents, nuclear warheads, international locales, etc.) - an unfortunate market concession for a series that was always unabashedly Hong Kong - but all the same, nobody does it better.

Just from memory it's not the best of the Police Story films but it has the ladder fight and as a kid, that fight was my shit. Like, I want to fight with ladders right now thinking about it.

Chan ("This guy can move like a monkey!") and his weapons of convenience: folding table, aluminum ladder, broom, umbrellas, stilts. A cheerful and cheesy James Bond spoof -- ski chase from _On Her Majesty's Secret Service_, man-eating shark and underwater combat from _Thunderball_ -- that takes our likable hero to the Ukraine ("Package for Alexander Nevsky!") and Australia.
