I actually watched this before but totally forgot. I'll keep paying to watch Ice Cube scowl/disapprove in movies. Nor sure why Katt Williams gets top billing here. Malinda Williams, though, was fiine. Fav scene: Tracy Morgan giving away their real names.

While there are some funny moments and a few jokes that hit the mark, the forced sentimentality (i.e. sappiness) gets in the way of really enjoying the film. As far as films about 'a comical hostage situation' go this is not one of the better ones. The cinematographer (Alan Caso) clearly had fun making this film; watch out for the deep focus shots that appear every now and then. The soundtrack is better than the visuals or storyline.

After watching XXX - State of the Union with Ice Cube, I can really see that this kind of urban comedy is much more suited for his acting style. I thought the cast was well chosen and a lot of the jokes were good. I am confident that most of Katt Williams stuff was probably ad-libbed, because his lines were usually pretty funny compared with Tracy Morgan's lines. I thought that the overall moral of the story was pretty moving. I could honestly say that I would watch this movie again.

Muddled, misguided mess can't decide if it wants to be a broad slacker comedy or an earnest fable along the lines of the Capra stable and by leaning on elements of both, it fatally undermines itself. The premise is ultimately so slight that it's hard to see how a different approach might have even improved things. As it is, a few elements emerge unscathed in Morgan's sometimes amusing asides, and Devine delivers the best (and most sincere) performance of the movie as a genial matriarch.

Pretty bad; a film that expects you to laugh and decipher some moral of the story. Worth watching if you like Tracy Morgan's crazy antics.

"On the basis of First Sunday, it would seem writer-director David E. Talbert has been keeping close tabs on the creative recipe for success concocted by Tyler Perry." - Nick Schager

There are a couple of good laughs in this movie. The script is weak, it tries to be a comedy and a heart warming film at the same time. Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan do not have good chemistry together. Overall this film is disappointing.

First Sunday isn't the most refined moviemaking you'll ever see, but it gives 2008 cinema a perfectly humane start.

Despite its a rapper in a garage in the hood look. The film really delivers on its ending.

I was looking forward to this, thought it'd be funny. It's not. It sucks.
