In 1975, the year before the Sex Pistols released their first album, a Japanese punk band called Gekirin recorded their single, "Fish Story" and then they broke up, never to record again. Thirty-seven years later, in 2012, their song saves the world. This is the tenth film from Yoshihiro Nakamura and we're not saying any more about it. (subwaycinema.com)

There are so many things going on here, both on the surface and a subtextually. It flits across genres and time periods nonlinearly, from a coming-of-age story to a band biopic to a hostage thriller and an apocalypse drama, while meditating on the art and where its meaning lies between creator and observer. Not a single thread is lost between the stories spread over four different eras, and it all culminates beautifully in punk saving the world. Just like real life.

One of my pet hates is episodic and/or story collections combined into a movie. As a consequence I started then gave up on this aprox 3 times. But positive mentions nagged at me and I finally determined I MUST focus & watch...by the end was absolutely blown away when everything seemingly chaotic & unrelated comes together to a very satisfying finale. IMHO this is one that you must determine to sit & watch, concentrate & avoid chance casual interruptions. In my experience you will be rewarded.

An amusing take on how art can be simultaneously ephemeral and meaningless in nature, yet vitally important at the same time. The non-linear storytelling gets a little confusing at times, but it all comes together at the end for a very satisfying finalé. Totally rockin' theme tune, too.

It seems to be an exercise in genre crossing that works very well. The theme song is catchy and the various stories are interesting and enjoyable in equal measure. The last 10 minutes or so really make this film what it is; bringing everything together in one well executed and crazy scene.

Rather charming, decidedly eccentric tale about how a domino effect set in motion by a one-hit wonder in the mid 1970s saves the world nearly forty years later. The narrative hops around and threatens to become confusing but a winning cast of characters sells it, and it all builds towards a wonderfully effective, genuinely moving conclusion.

Quirky, funny, sometimes tense. Loses a little of its momentum towards the end, and then makes up for it with a bang. Make sure to watch the end, and plan some time for thinking after it is done.

Really interesting nonlinear puzzle. Performances are a bit uneaven but there's a lot of attention to detail in the multiple storylines and they interlock well even before the final reveal. Probably merits rewatching to pick up on all the hints undoubtedly scattered throughout.

There are major issues with the pacing, but I'm really glad I stuck with it until the very end. This movie is fully backloaded unlike anything else.

An insane exercise in juggling as many strands of story possible and keeping them all connected. How does a single save the world from imminent peril? The narrative solutions are expected yet still surprising. A big plus is a passage that could be right out of a hostage crisis action movie that actually keeps the camera locked on a tripod.

A fun idea with a lot of enjoyable moments, but a lot of awkward uneven ones too and the fractured narrative doesn't really add anything to the film, just impedes the flow. The good outweighs the bad for a good time, but it's not something that will stay with me.

A very bizarre premise and a confusing narrative but this compelling and well constructed film has an explanatory and satisfying conclusion.

I liked how something as big as the end-of-the-world was handled so small-scaled. Some parts were better than others. Unfortunate the longest part (or what seemed to be the longest part) about the punkband was my least favorite part of the movie.

A punk rock band saving the world should kick major amounts of ass but I don't think the barely connected episodes work here. Not terribly strong as genre pastiches, which just leaves you waiting for the payoff at the end.

Gorgeous little film gem about a story about... a fish? No, it's about the apocalypse, the birth of punk, it's also about kindness and action. The non-linear story, the mish-mash of genres, it all ends up working so well until the triumphant ending. It's a satisfying story about interdependence and also fuck doomerism!

This film, based on a novel by Kôtarô Isaka whose novel "Bullet Train" was adapted this year, jumps around between 4 storylines, eventually revealing how this obscure punk song will save mankind. This is a pretty amazing flick.
