André Demester shares his time between his farm and walks with Barbe, his childhood friend. He loves her secretly and painfully, accepting from her the little that she can give him. Along with the others his age, Demester leaves home to be a soldier in a war in a far off land. Barbarity, camaraderie and fear turn Demester into a warrior. As the seasons go by, Barbe, alone and wasting away, waits for the soldiers to return. Will Demester's boundless love for Barbe save him? (International Film Circuit)

A film with potential, but a bit too simplistic in its construction. Some farmers are called up to go to war. They leave their teary-eyed girlfriends at home. The war is horrible and they come home. Relationships have changed. It's all directed with an emotionless distance which could somehow represent the horrors of war. But actually, nothing much changed, and it's all a bit boring.

It's interesting, I suppose, and it has a certain style. The slow tempo and lack of music or sound at all, gives it a strong character, whereas the plot, acting and overall themes are dull. We've seen the story about how grueful war over, how it changes people, all that. It becomes a string of unconvincing happenings bordering to being the new ugly clichés of warfare; rape, torture, kids in war. ... never worked for me, it was too simple maybe.

Somehow Dumont's preoccupations fail to congeal here, at least for this viewer. It seems to be an intentionally non-realistic fable (this is normal for Dumont) about a young man wrestling with his own inexpressiveness, and finding the means of articulating his emotions by enduring an ordeal of transgression. But as such this fable risks, despite its ambiguity, despite being open to interpretation, and despite the echoes of Georges Bataille, winding up almost as trite as THE DEER HUNTER.

More glacial miserablism from Dumont, as could be expected. Finely crafted, and overall probably his strongest work, although the relentless bleakness gets a bit tiring.

"Dumont effectively conjures between the dreary routine of everyday life and the normalised horrors of this nameless conflict."

Stereotypes become archetypes under Dumont's otherwordly gaze. One of the most interesting and disturbing explorations into gender, sex and war.

A bit too rough around the edges, simplistic and not entirely in a good way.

One of the best war dramas. Very cruel and powerful.

This is a fairly astonishing film featuring a very slow, deliberate style of action, characters who seem to lack any kind of interior life, and a casual, off-hand anti-realism. The climax of the film involves a betrayal, possibly in retaliation for a perceived harm, which another character claims to have witnessed, even though they could not have done so. This should all be off-putting, but it's not.
