Without a doubt the gayest film I have ever seen, and for accomplishing that without even revealing a single penis it has to count for something.

It's like a high-camp Wizard of Oz in space. Intentionally cheesy with some impressive scenery being chewed to pieces by everyone (especially Blessed and von Sydow). The Queen soundtrack, as over-the-top as the visuals, is the icing on the cake. There's just something infectiously fun about seeing top quality actors having a blast making a very tongue-in-cheek homage to the classic 30s serials.

If you're about to rate this movie, and you're thinking "Hey! 'Flash Gordon'! Didn't that suck?", then don't forget about Brian Blessed cast as a bird - or Timothy Dalton cast as a walking moustache. Don't forget that it is Max von Sydow himself who plays Ming the Merciless. Oh, and don't forget that I have the soundtrack on record. Did that last piece of information leave you with a tiny, sharp pinch of jealousy? Then that is how awesome, you had forgotten, that this cheesefest is. DIIIIVE!!

This might be the most expensive campy film ever made, even though big chunk of the budget went into the noses of producers. Not for a second this film takes itself seriously, and that is exactly why I had so much fun watching it. You can see that there was a lot work put into sets and costumes. However, the biggest visual attraction is Ornella Muti, as a nymphomaniac princess. Soundtrack by Queen finishes the package that should be sold together with a fat blunt.

The impressive production design combined w/ the clunky efx & dream allusions r far more reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz than Star Wars. A hornier Wizard but still. If the relationships weren't so sexually charged/laughable & Semple's dialogue so unintentionally hysterical (unlike his work on the 60's Batman show it doesn't all seem deliberate) comparisons 2 Terry Gilliam might've been thrown around. Still, like LSD, if ur brain chemistry's right, this could prove entertainingly kooky.

Deeply silly, entertaining, impassioned. I love the elaborate costume/set designs and that iconic theme music. Okay - the main guy is basically worthless, fight scenes are laughable, effects are pure 80s - I still don't care much, this is fun.

FLASH! a-ah... Somehow avoided this in my childhood. Intentionally campy space Hunger Games with great costume design, practical effects, and a pumping soundtrack by Queen. Yellow-Peril Ming got less scary as the movie progressed. Disappointed we never saw Orenalla Muti's secret pleasure palace built for two. Timothy Dalton's Robin Hood somehow becomes Emperor. Melody Anderson gets a slave drunk so the latter can be raped. Fav scene: Flash rallying the Birdemic troops.

The set and costume design is appallingly gaudy and trippy (everything is in lush, contrasting colors, and liberally decorated with shiny and metallic bits), and the acting performances are terribly wooden. It's probably the most embarrassing thing on Timothy Dalton's resume. Loved it.

Flash Gordon is a weird and wonderful film, full of strange visuals and backed by an great soundtrack by Queen. The acting levels vary drastically, but somehow everyone seems to fit their character perfectly well, though Max Von Sydow is the undoubted highlight of the movie, playing Ming with relish. Flash Gordon is a highly stylised movie that some would dismiss as garish sci-fi nonsense, but the film's unique look and feel is what sets it apart from the crowd. Hail Ming!

This is another one of those movies that's cheesy in a good way and that's probably nostalgia speaking here. I've seen this film more than any other when I was a kid. The effects are laughably bad and so is the acting in long stretches but it is charming and keeps up the camp spirit of the original serial. The Queen song is an absolute classic too.

A movie for every man who thought that lazers, birdmen and Queen make the perfect combination. Flash Gordon doesn't aim to be much more than a comic book on film and doesn't seem to care about being taken seriously with its ridiculous costumes and faux 50's scifi sets. The dialogue falls below even comic book standards at times and the action can seem more clumsy than stylish, but there's a confident weirdness that makes it easy to forgive.

Even Max Von Sydow AND Brian Blessed can't counter the awesome acting chops of Sam "I was in a movie once" Jones. Add to that a pulsing slice of cheese soundtrack and a screenplay by the spectacularly overrated author of "Sheena". So why do I like this so much?

The unbelievably annoying theme song by Queen is only the first problem with the film, but it's still a lot of dumb fun from the time that special effects were just about to become as good as they needed to be for the films they were used in. Ugh!

On the glory of camp. Flash Gordon is a children's film for adults, a sad reminder of a time when comic book adaptations had zero pretenses about being anything more than dumb fun. Under Hodges' knowing eye, it's a glorious celebration of adolescent heroism shot on gaudy sets designed by Donati that are almost Fellini-esque in their mix of art and kitsch. Jones is a bit of a wet blanket as Flash, but Von Sydow makes a devilishly sly Ming, and Blessed chews scenery with shouty exuberance.

Pure campy brilliance. Von Sydow can act up a storm (with what he's given), but Jones could have been replaced by a Chia Pet and it wouldn't have made a difference. I have a sneaking suspicion the film is actually a revised retelling of the Indian religious epic 'the Ramayana'. But I probably read too much into these things.

Flash Gordon, a guilty pleasure of mine, because it is a very funny movie, largely due to its, fully intentional, tongue in-cheek humour. It is more an honest homage to the 1930's Flash Gordon Series, with its hilariously wooden main characters except a great Max von Sydow, visibly having much fun playing his role. Definately not for modern audiences, who go into a superhero flick, wanting gritty "realism" without realizing they just have been watching 2 hours of a man in a plastic bat costume.

Basically Barbarella with less overt concupiscence and more scenery chewing. By rights, I should hate this movie, but in the hands of the genius behind the campy Batman TV show's writing, Lorenzo Semple Jr., this film celebrates all things gaudy, silly, and campy. The two really, really, REALLY bad actors in the lead contrast with a cast of overacting legends (Topol, Blessed, Dalton, von Sydow, Wyngarde) to make a very funny film where everyone enjoys what they do far more than anyone should.

I guess this is what you expect when the director of GET CARTER takes on fantasy? 🤨 Utterly bizarre, hypnotically overblown tribute to gee-whiz serials starts at fever pitch with Queen’s assaultive score and has nowhere to go but up – giving Blessed and Topol the opportunity to hambone to their heart’s content is its own reward, but it’s von Sydow who subtly raises the stakes as the dastardly villain. Far too much of a good thing, but still quite a lot of broad, silly fun to be had here.

Flash Gordon goes to outer space with doctor Zarkov to save earth from evil Ming as seen many times on comic books and serials. Goofy and fun is the nature of this movie. I didn't like this ten years ago and I don't know what I was thinking. It is an absolute camp classic, funny on purpose without sacrificing sincere silliness, colorful and ridiculous in the best way. Plus, Flash's main role as a hero is to just be really stubborn about the idea that everybody should be friends and team up against the oppressor - very good, very anime, and gives every other character their chance to shine. The only thing that knocks off points is lingering Yellow Peril designs.

This is easily one of the best cinema experiences I've ever had, up there with the likes of "The Room". Ridiculous amount of fun, whether or not the film is as great when watching at home is open to debate but I can't imagine it isn't. There's barely a dull moment, if there isn't something hilarious happening, there's an awesome action sequence. If there isn't an awesome action sequence, Queen's awesome soundtrack is blaring. Basically, it's 60s Batman in space. "Freeze, you bloody bastards!"

Splashy updated version of Raymond's sci-fi hero scripted with broad, _Batman_-like strokes. Lots of flashy camerawork, pop art set design, and a very loud score by Queen almost make this the _Barbarella_ of the '80s, but it's too slow and self-consciously campy to be of more than mild interest.

Much fun, when not trying extra-extra hard also to be funny. A bit like a Barbarella on a much bigger budget. It's a cruel fact of fantasy that money counts for more in this sort of endeavor than in most others, and Dino De Laurentiis, who controlled the purse strings on both these movies, did it right this time.
