Conveys the human toll as well as the physical, emotional and psychological challenges faced by refugees in ways I haven't seen before. I was afraid the animation would come across as a gimmick, but it's used effectively to visually portray chapters of Amin's life that might've otherwise remained buried deep within his psyche. A great example of story, character and execution working flawlessly together.

I enjoyed this format of documentary telling of the refugee story more than others. This animation allowed for transitions into darker aspects that perfectly conveyed the dream and the regret. Fav scene: seeing the cruise ship and cheering, then being sent to Estonia to start the cruel cycle all over again.

Remarkable film that manages to capture a rare first person documentary account of the horrific people smuggling/trafficking trade; by using animation to tell this heart-rending story, Rasmussen manages to bring his charged material to uncompromised life, achieving a vivid, powerful document of Amin’s struggle (one shudders at the thought of this material in live action awkwardly pepped up with CGI). A potentially ungainly hybrid, but pulled off brilliantly.

Beautifully put together, almost understated, it reveals a truly tragic, personal story -sadly shared by so many -but despite the brutally of those with power the story telling gives weight to small acts of kindness and large acts of self sacrifice.

The decision to animate this documentary is striking. It serves two practical purposes. Amin wants to keep his identity a secret, so animating him is a means to that end. It also allows endless freedom to reconstruct and restage the past. It does more than this for the film. In many ways, it simulates the emotion and psychology of the story, creating an impressionistic version of Amin's past.

The true story is incredible, its layers of horror and perseverance, coming-of-age and even adulthood, told with a deft but sensitive touch by its subject and the documentarians. The animation is a very clever conceit, but except for in its impressionistic strokes of foggy memory, it’s only ever serviceable - but such a critique can’t hold up against the whole picture; it’s a beautiful film well told.

As gutting as anything I’ve seen in a while. This isn’t achieved through graphic visuals, but through its string of harrowing incidents, each one rife with inhumanity and tragedy. My heart was breaking for every person in this film.

sıfır orjinallik. persepolis varken çekilmesine gerek var mıydı diye düşünüyorum. onu geçtim. hayatımda izlediğim en komünizm düşmanı filmlerden biri. çok gereksiz bir şekilde.

The true story is relatively interesting but it could've been a tough sell if the great animation and effective storytelling hadn't been so compelling. Really well done.

2021 yılının en iyi filmlerinden biri animasyon çıkması şaşırtıcı. Afgan 1 gencin hayat hikayesini izliyoruz. Afganistan rejimi değişmesi sonucu, mülteci olarak kaçan Amin, aynı zamanda kendi kişiliğini de çözecektir. Filmin her sahnesi etkileyici. Aile bağları çok güçlü. Hayatın anlamını da çok iyi anlatmış. Filmin sonunda, gel beraber böğürtlen yiyelim. Haydi söyle onu nasıl sevdiğimi. Haydi söyle rüyalarda gördüğümü.

I was a bit guarded at first, because I saw the animation as not very accomplished and the setup as commonplace for an immigrant story. But the journey really got to me, in part because it pinpoints adolescent emotions so succinctly. What a tragedy this corrupt world is, and what heartbreak lies in the past of people we see in the streets every day.

People ought to see this just to see how cinematic it's not; the typical refugee situation doesn't have a three-act structure. It's one step forward, two steps back, until both the start and end points are so hard to define that "home" tends to become an empty word.

Everyone has a story to tell, but, as it turns out, some are quite a bit more harrowing as others. This is incredibly moving filmmaking that is heightened by beautiful animation.
