Four small gangsters from Copenhagen trick a gangster boss: they take over 4,000,000 kroner which they were supposed to bring him. Trying to escape to Barcelona they are forced to stop in the countryside, in an old, wrecked house, hiding there for several weeks. Slowly, one after another, they realize, that they would like to stay there, starting a new life, renovating the house and forming it into a restaurant. But they can't avoid being caught up by their past. (imdb)

One of those movies you can watch again and again. Anders Thomas Jensen does a great job wrapping a tale of four friends who's only family is eachother into a comedy whit more oneliners than any Hollywood action flick from the 80's or 90's (That is of course if you're danish) and even though the dish itself is not that good I refer to the last line of the film!

A Danish attempt at making a Tarantino movie, mixed with coming-of-age-tragedies and a generous dose of surrealism, featuring Mads Mikkelsen before he was hot. It shouldn't work, but it does. It's crude, sentimental and predictable and yet also funny, touching and keeps you invested in the characters. Also, I need to use "Lortespasserbus!" more often.

Essential modern Danish cinema. Flickering Lights has a very entertaining cover but when you peel away the front, it is so layered and is actually a deeply traumatic and sad movie which probably explains why it is favorite of psychology teachers everywhere. It does overstay its welcome at some points, the dialogue gets a bit ham-handed here and there but the ensemble cast puts in a great performance (especially Ulrich Thomsen and Sofie Gråbøl) and with a layered story, it is still a classic.

Listlessly scripted. The characters' motivations are contrived and the subtext is heavy-handed.

Not Jensen's best work - but there are some very funny scenes and all the actors are great. So it's a pretty good time. And the opening scene is hilarious, also the egg-blowing scene.

Den er så dansk så den nærmest nærmer sig "folkekomedieniveau" - super historie, skønne skuespillere - bare god

There are some clichées in the film I could do without, some bizarre turns are also made, but in the end, everything kind of sums up to a cute movie. I like how Jensen's films have a really 'classical' soundtrack, that quite often adds not a really classical feel to the scene.

The fairy tale structure does it no favours and the theatrical background stories are childishly naive - no gray nuances here. However, in spite of the questionable apple motif, I suppose Jensen is one of the better writers we have in Danish cinema. Whoa, I just made myself sad.

A decent mix of comedy and drama, with a light crime-sauce. Mikkelsen steals the show.

Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas' s character works are just amazing. The rest is not surprising.

Enjoyable redemption tale with black humour and a sweet heart.

A truly bizarre amalgam of very many genres. From hokey comedy to moments of intense violence, it spans the gamut of crime thrillers, Tarantino-like homages, coming-of-age movies, and a strangely dark folksiness. While enjoyable, it didn't quite work for me--not being Danish, I might be missing some cultural context.
