An excellent first twenty minutes featuring one of the best plane crash sequences ever committed to film is unfortunately followed by two bloviated, intensely preachy hours about the evils of alcoholism. I went in expecting a movie and instead got a lecture. A well-acted lecture with a few gripping moments, but a lecture nonetheless. Props to the extremely talented trailer editors who managed to make this movie look a hell of a lot more interesting than it actually is.

A predictably moralistic and pedestrian film that covers a number of genre but does none of them justice. I've heard people unfavourably compare the trajectory of this film to the flight itself, but that's not entirely accurate because this film begins well but then ends by crashing headfirst into a huge mountain of shit.

The moral of the film is it doesn't matter how much you drink as long as you snort some cocaine after that

This movie gets points for coming out after the Sully incident, and asking, "What if the pilot was a train wreck?" Zemeckis uses his usual tropes, including a mild mannered hero and an overbearing soundtrack. Seriously, the drug scene includes Cowboy Junkies & the Red Hot Chili Peppers--as if someone put on the Spotify Heroin Channel before shooting up. Also, the plane crash special FX are great. While it doesn't have anything new to say about alcoholism, it accomplishes what it sets out to do.

A well made but flawed film that examines what happens when an alcoholic pilot pulls off a miracle. The plane crash is probably the most harrowing crash sequence put on film and Danzel gives a stunning performance. Starts out strong and then drags in the second half, before giving a satisfying conclusion.

Well-acted but preachy and long-winded drama that ends up exactly where you'd expect it to go if you know your Hollywood. Never quite lives up to what it promises in its first 20 minutes, which are excellent and set up most of what happens after, but are also far more interesting than what happens after. But hey, the next time I see a pilot get drunk and snort coke before a flight, I'll feel a lot safer.

A welcome return to live action films for Zemeckis, despite making an all too obvious commentary on the perils of alcoholism and unfolding exactly as you expect it to. Washington however nails his role as a man struggling to come to terms with his addiction, offering the great actor a chance to step out of his comfort zone, yet it's a role he portrays with the same coolness as when playing a gangster or a crooked cop.

Well I walked in to the movie ten minutes late so I apparently missed the best part: the plane crash. The rest is just sort of a cliche story about alcoholism that anyone could walk into any AA meeting across the country and hear. They try to polish the turd by making him some kind of hero-esque functioning alcoholic but in the end it joins the ranks of movies that, if you've seen the trailer you basically saw the whole thing. So pretty much every Denzel Washington movie ever.

Gives the impression of having been written by a guy who went to AA, was impressed by its “spiritual” elements, decided to write a movie about it, but thought he needed to glamorise the subject by making the protagonist into a guy who flies big planes. The result is rather absurd, and it is hard not to feel that the whole thing might seem more dynamic and appealing if the order of scenes was reversed.

A bit overrated. After an awesome and intense beginning the film turns into a character study about addiction. I would have no problem with that if it weren't extremely heavy-handed and wrapped up in a ridiculous way. It's still a good movie, it's just not anything I'll ever need to see again.

'Flight' is in many ways as flawed as its premise is far-fetched but, along with the intense setup, Denzel's performance is the reason to board. I accepted the contrivances. They put Whip under pressure by raising the stakes to the limit which heightens - or at least accentuates - the drama. The main problem is that the depiction of drug and alcohol abuse seems less than believeable, too. Hopefully this will mark a turning point in Washington's career. The guy deserves more challenging material.

Starts out amazing and then just gradually deteriorates until the end which was just a tacked on, sentimental piece of garbage. Could've been really dark and twisted but they Hollywooded it up and ruined what could've been a legitimately great movie about addiction. Denzel was great and someone needs to give some love to James Badge Dale, nice to see that guy finally starting to show up in stuff.

So fucking depressing. It starts off great, but I think that the trailers seriously misrepresent the tone of the film. I went in thinking it was going to be a bit more of a comedic drama but was smacked in the face with full-on depression. Look, I grew up in a house with two addicted parents and watching this film just brought back some unwanted feelings. There were just too many times I wished I could reach in and smack some sense into Denzel's character.....

After that first (brilliant) flight sequence I was hooked. From that point on however, the film seemed to go out of its way to render itself irrelevant, reaching all its conclusions about 30 minutes later than it should. Good cast, fairly well put together, but painfully unsubtle. If nothing else, it's nice to see Zemeckis make a proper film again.

Engaging storytelling, although I felt Reilly's character was sidelined. It was kind of weird when people kept saying that 'God did it' and that was said to be a fine excuse for the plane to crash, but I much preferred the first half to the second, which delved more into his background and wasn't backed up with such contrived writing. Washington also became less convincing the more the film progressed, and the plane crash scenes at the beginning were much more interesting to watch.

Well, the first 25 minutes of this film were actually pretty amazing. The plane sequence is really well done, and I was on the edge of my seat. Unfortunately, the film doesn't (or can't) sustain this tension for the rest of the running time. It just kind of drags on, without much at stake except the looming trial. It becomes about alcoholism, but it doesn't really have anything interesting to say on the subject. The cast were fine. Disappointing second and third acts, but alright overall.

If you think you've seen the whole movie because you've seen the trailer, you're almost right. There's a bit more to it than that, but I've got to say that while I found the film engaging and its actors comfortable (and enjoyable) to watch, taken as a whole, it's about what you'd expect if all you've seen is the trailer. See it if you love Denzel (and/or Goodman and/or Cheadle), but try to go in with moderate expectations.

I don't know if that landing is even physically possible, but I don't care - that crash sequence was absolute perfection. Unfortunately, it is all downhill from there. The entire film is filmed and acted competently, but from the crash onward the story descends into an utterly predictable, heavy-handed tale with the profound message that "addiction is bad." Could have possibly told the story out of chronological order to maintain a bit of suspense and interest. Oh well...

A pretty decent drama about a hero pilot who has a drinking and drug problem. The biggest issue with this film is its length. It's over two hours long and at times really feels like it. The crash scene at the start is very epic though and I love the courtroom drama at the end. I will agree with my friend that this movie just had a real identity problem. Comedy? Drama? D. Washington's career seemed to have become a relentless jetstream of high-concept Denzel-centric blockbuster action and drama fare. Cleverly, his latest ticks boxes at both ends of his spectrum: it features dramatic plane-inverting antics of the most risible and entertaining nature, as well as a sterling dramatic performance packed with maturity and heart-rending poignancy. Whoever had the idea of combining the two, I do not know, but somehow, it just works! This film is Denzel in a nutzel.

I've seen Denzel Washington give better performances. This one is pretty ham-fisted in its approach to the subject. While not bad, it's not that great either. While it has a definite story-arc and character development, it lacks any kind of subtlety. The problem is that it's obvious how things are going to play out and so few risks are taken with the story or characters that it feels condescending in that it doesn't give the audience credit for detecting subtlety in a serious subject.

Misleading trailer aside, this is not a good movie about drug/alcohol addiction. Denzel's character is only redeemed in the last 10 minutes of the film; up until then, he's despicable and the only reason to root for him is because he was an unlikely savior. The film oddly glorifies cocaine as a hangover cure and possibly as the reason for all of his flight decisions. Also your drug dealer is a really cool fat guy who listens to the Stones. What an uninspired soundtrack by the way.

Flight marked Robert Zemeckis' return to live action filmmaking after working on several animated projects. The involvement of Denzel Washington is a good enough reason to watch this film and he gives one of his best performances. But this disappointingly dull film is heavily reliant on his performance alone. Once the impressive crash sequence is over, the film just goes into further decline. And ultimately the obvious message that 'addiction is bad' just isn't as powerful as it thinks it is.

The alcoholic ruse comes crashing down. The flight in question comes crashing down & the plot comes crashing down. They all tasted clean air for a moment, then things turned upside down. Skipping through some vague god talk, we arrive at the finale, a bit of hard self-analytical honesty. A point that Denzel's character probably would have admitted in the opening sequence, but where's the fun in that? John Goodman stomps around pushing cocaine on pilots while Don Cheadle looks on enviously.

There's good and bad to be found in this flick, which takes monstrous stylistic turns in an attempt to appear gritty and real... which sadly renders some portions wholly unrealistic. The good includes many of the performances; while Denzel is Denzel, can John Goodman get some love? Dude is phenomenal! The flight sequence and Kelly Reilly are both great. Sadly, the bad is as evident as Whip's alcoholism, and the movie somewhat devolves to preachy, religious anti-alcohol dogma. Far from brilliant.

It seems to be the universal opinion that this film opens flawlessly with a crash sequence that deserves much better to follow it. I kept expecting Flight to contain a strong moral debate over the events of the crash, but instead we're subjected to Washington doing the same thing for two hours before reaching his predictable resolution. There's nice scenes scattered throughout and Denzel is always great, the film just never realizes its full potential.

Washington, yet again, chooses a role in which his character is tortured, punished and makes the rest of humanity look irredeemable, but it is a performance that makes Flight worth watching. Unfortunately, the film is ultimately a little disappointing. It never lives up to, or even comes close to, the excitement present in the first act. While the portrayal of addiction and alcoholism is well-handled, it often feels drawn out, and Goodman's character is great but feels out of place.

Denzel Washington has never truly impressed me as an actor. Training Day came close, but I still have seen much better performances by non-Oscar nominated/winning actors. Here, Denzel absolutely blew my past feelings about him away in this film. His tortured, alcoholic, drug-abusing character is so real and powerful that it just hit a nerve and shattered it. Zemeckis returns to live-action films in a stunning, giant character-driven story. He presents a vicious, self-destructive hero in a helpless downfall, but refuses to rely on emotions. First of all, this is a tale of a horny, drunk and high rockstar, and not a redemption melodrama about a pilot who made the impossible. Zemeckis, following the classic canon of Hollywood storytelling -- the whole film is a victim-hero-villain statement --, wants the audience to care about Whip just the way he is.

Features one of the best crash scenes ever on film. It's one of those sequences that gives you sweaty palms. It's nice to see Denzel playing a sullen fuck up again. He really immerses himself into the emotions of this type of role. It's interesting to see the slight spin he gives to these raw performances especially if you compare it with Creesy (Man on fire) or Alonzo (Training day.) But these are unfortunately words that the script cannot hold in the air, and thus is all goes in a nosedive. Although in its favour it doesn't really overplay the whole "God crashed the plane, but also somehow you did, and now you must repay God for that" as much as I feared. Alcoholism isn't just about drinking too much, it's also about lying, bargaining, manipulation (and some other things). The strength of this movie is that it realizes there are multiple vectors to alcoholism and ruminates on (most of) them with a solid Denzel Washington performance. Unfortunately it's also preoccupied with depicting a Big Bad Union's quest for self-preservation (while conspicuously downplaying the reckless behavior of the airline) and shoehorning in a redemptive conclusion.

An excellent drama that capitalizes on its visceral intensity early on by delivering emotional depth and honesty afterward. Denzel is marvelous. I disagree that the film is too preachy or moralistic--it puts a lot of work into the character and earns every bit of drama that is produced. It's not a general indictment of alcohol, but rather a focused portrait of guilt and self-doubt that happens to rely on certain motifs (alcohol and religion, namely). Saying otherwise ignores the character's arc.

FLIGHT is a well-made film with a severe flaw: it doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a dark comedy, a thriller, a character study, a story of redemption? It starts well--the crash scene is quite effective--but after the first third begins to lose steam (at 138 minutes, it's decidedly overlong), and after a last flourish of dark comedy, ends on a preachy, heavy-handed note. Still, Robert Zemeckis' direction is solid, Denzel Washington is strong, and the supporting cast does what they can.

Flight as a whole mirrors the (genuinely tense and exciting) crash scene early in, nosediving to its conclusion - this time without hope of a miraculous recovery. We get a protagonist we can't root for, a string of incredibly tedious dialogues, a criminally underused Cheadle, and John Goodman as yet another awkwardly misjudged comic relief, all capped off with a terrible, hackneyed ending. Should've gone with the crash investigation angle rather than the dull study of alcoholism it becomes.

Solid drama and solid performances from some top acting talent. Goodman definitely had fun with his character. Washington ageing, seemingly Cheadle frozen in age.

implausible, but watchable.

Plane-crash and alcohol abuse as entertainment is a strange mix that actually works pretty good. And finally a movie about alcohol with the guts to display scotch and vodka as something tasty.

From the premise this seems like an outright mysetery. But do not be fooled, this is a tale with obvious and uninteresting conclusions. Ultimately a slow and uninteresting journey.

Zemeckis made already few "gems" along the way. "Flight" is maybe not a precious stone in his career but deserves attention as a complete hybrid of Hollywood-like roleplay and a good drama. Of course there's a lot of things to pick on, as well as many to enjoy. Starting like an action movie, followed by some half-comed0y plot, finishing as a drama - "Flight" is a pretty solid contender to be a good choice to fill up melancholic evening for two.

Denzel is the shining light in this very one note film. I'm glad that Zemeckis is back to making live-action films, but the incessant sentimental message that alcoholism and denial are bad gets old after a fantastic opening. John Goodman's 5 minutes of screen time is funny, albeit completely pointless.

It's not stellar, and not original. I was entertained, but that's not saying a lot. It could certainly be better.

I was honestly expecting a conspiracy movie, but what I was left with was just a flawed "protagonist". Shame.

An intense portrayal of a flawed, yet heroic man. Flight is overly preachy at times, but its depiction of alcoholism, combined with one of the best performances of Denzel Washington's career, makes it a film worth seeing.

An honest tale of one man's struggle with the inner demon of alcoholism, of guilt and redemption, of pride. Denzel is good as usual, in a film mostly suffering by inconsistent pacing - too slow at some unnecessarily prolonged scenes - and inconsistencies in presentation: the John Goodman character felt out of place, and the slightly comedic scene glorifying cocaine towards the end was very off-key. A few cultural tropes - passive marxist propaganda - stand out for me too. Otherwise a good effort

People who don't like this movie are probably alcoholics.
