Flight of the Eagle

Brilliant Herzogian tale of man vs (his own) nature, sticking fairly close to the historical events while still telling a story of its own. von Sydow is brilliantly restrained, playing a man forcing himself to be convinced of his own infallibility even when everything points to the opposite. How the fuck is this not available except on scratchy old VHS tapes? When did Swedish film makers stop aspiring to these vistas?

A superior example of this type of movie, with subtle characterisation, excellent performances, a thoughtful approach to composing imagery and a convincing presentation of the circumstances.
