Tame and conventional, but well made and quite sympathetic.

Takes a while to get engaging, but in the end there is some truly remarkable acting from Magda Schneider that manages to stir the emotions remarkably well.

An exceptional early Ophuls, equally concerned with brief, luminous glimpses of hope and the silent menace of looming tragedy. The success of the melodrama is sustained solely by the natural sentimentality of Magda Schneider, while the gauzy chiaroscuro ups the stakes, lending the whole film the warm sense of a half-remembered dream.

Excellently played, shot and written. Considering the potentially melodramatic subject matter, Flirtation is exceptionally tasteful and convincing - every dialogue is pitch perfect, and the last act is touching and tense. Ophüls is in full bloom.

I must admit that it took a while before I got caught in the story. At first glance it felt like another sugar sweet love story without much intrigue, but half-way through the movie things started shaping and got more moving. The sense of what was going to happen started sinking in. Max Ophüls shows a elegant way of filming and capturing the subtle emotions of a scene regardless if it's happy or troubled and can be proud of this movie made so early in his directorial career.

Great romance that flies through it's running time by touching on a variety of subjects with deftness both in the writing and in the filming. The acting is great all around and brings depth to a plot that's been done many times. Magda Schneider stands out thanks to an excellent finale. The light moments and tense moments are balanced nicely, though they do encroach on each other a bit and lessen the film's impact slightly.

Box Versátil Melodrama no Cinema.

Very elegant. The comedy is funny, the suspense is tense, the romance is charming, and the drama is touching. The story is a bit pat and melodramatic, but it clips along at a quick pace so that the 83 minutes feels like a half hour. All of the actors in this movie were superb. The sets and costumes were very well designed. The cinematography is very fine, at times remarkably impressive. The sleigh ride scene is gorgeous, and there's some marvelous camera movement that seems ahead of its time.
