At exactly an hour long this is noir stripped totally bare. A gruesome murderer, a plucky female reporter and and two hard working cops. Other than some good cinematography and a rousing finale there's not much here that stands out, but not much wrong either. The acting is adequate, the plot is a bit clever if not particularly impressive and the lean pacing makes easy to watch.

Limp dialogue, silly plot devices, lame attempts to add "colorful" characters, flat acting and zero chemistry between the leads. There's just nothing interesting going on here. The bright star of this movie is cinematographer Robert De Grasse, who maybe goes a little overboard on the dutch angles, but those rain-soaked streets look dynamite. Best of all is his work during the terrific factory chase climax. If only the rest of the film was as promising as that scene.

The dummy angle was clever.... and slightly creepy. Made for an intriguing hour of fresh investigatory techniques for a crime mystery like this. Surprised at how well it worked.
