Very old-fashioned 'epic' film, emphasising the role of death in life in a very Mexican way. It hints at the perennial clash between town and country, between modernising elites and conservative ordinary folk on the wrong side of 'history', but doesn't make that theme explicit enough. Doing so would have made it a sharper analysis of the cost of 'progress' and the destructive effects of Modernity to the individual's right to be himself or herself.

"The film is awash in blandly brown-toned cinematography, action scenes more violent than rousing, and a whole host of bathetic subplots." - Andrew Schenker

I think the way this film is marketed is unfortunate. This is not a "religious film". This is Mexico's Braveheart or Patriot: both film had religion in them, but it's a film about people fighting for their lives and their freedom. And it's a great war-drama! I'd recommend it for all audiences that like war films religious and non-religious.
